Is he really under the impression that people think he was chasing money? Nothing about his decision screams chasing money. He gave up tons of money by doing what he did.

yeah I don't think anybody thought he was chasing money. Family reasons, going to the US and stuff like that? Sure. But chasing money? Nah.

I don’t think he was chasing money, he was chasing the East Coast. But he obviously was torn about staying in Calgary. Delaying his decision until the 11th hour meant his preferred destinations had no idea he would be available and thus had no ability to add him, and he burnt his bridge with the Flames and the city. I think he was genuinely torn (and seems like he still is). He mentions here the feeling of the city wanting him to stay, he said at the time he thought about returning even after free agency on 7 years, but after what happened it couldn’t be. I think he made a big mistake by not making up his mind earlier. We’ve probably all had those moments in our lives.
I wish he stayed here. I would have went to $11m to keep him. The team misses him and I think people were really blind to the type of special player he is. We won’t see someone as talented as him for a while.

Man this is emerging as a "can we please lock this abomination" topic candidate that rivals the "Treliving must go" topic.

He's easily one of the most entertaining players in the league. BoAs with him and McDavid both making insane plays happen were some of the most entertaining we'll see for ages
I kind of hope that CBJ continues to stink it up this year and they land Bedard in the draft. Jordan Dumais is looking pretty exciting for them too with what he's doing in the QMJHL. I wouldn't be unhappy if they ended up playing together as a super-exciting trio.

I think Guadreau picked the right team for himself, a team that's willing to pay him over $9M for 7 years, not as much as his former team but $9M is nothing to sneeze at. Also, he picked a place that's is close to home but not too close. And a team that's not going to make the playoff, so all he needs to do is plays 82 games and have a long off season to enjoy his $9M. Also, he signed for 7 years so, he's set, doesn't have to worry about signing his next contract.

I agree. He probably does regret it. At the same time, he's probably also pretty happy with his life situation overall.

probably happy with zero pressure...you have to think a professional athlete would want to compete for a cup during their prime though. IDK maybe not

Like all things in life I am quite sure that the drive and desire of all professional athletes is not the same, and that is fine. Gaudreau could very possibly end up being completely satisfied that he had a long NHL career, even if he never plays another playoff game; if so, this is not the irredeemable flaw in his character that several posters seem to think it is.

"NHL Player" is still a job. Maybe some players don't actually want to win the cup.
Imagine if your job came to you and was like "Hey, so we're actually going to need you to work several months of overtime while the other half of the company is on holiday. Oh yeah, the work will be harder and the days will be often longer. What's that, will you get paid more? Ha, good one, but we do have a shiny trophy for whoever works the most and does the best!"
I don't think you'd be thrilled.
