Imagine Carolina wins the cup this year, defeating Dallas, who they traded Rantanen to, after Marner blocked a trade that would have sent him to Carolina and Rantanen to Toronto, only for Marner to sign in Carolina after this season.
I kind of want all of this to happen

That would be awesome bring on the chaos.
Carolina also owns Dallas 26 and 27 1st rounders, imagine that team being sent into a tailspin.

I doubt that Marner signs here for reasons already stated, but I also assume players look at opportunity and role on a team. Yes, Marner and Kadri are friends, but Kadri (will be) 35. Does Marner really pick Calgary so he can play with #1 center Kadri? Do the Flames have a shot at winning the cup next year with Marner? It just doesn't seem very appealing to him at this point, unless the Flames offer him a max deal (which would be terrible).
I would assume that Marner would want to play with a high-end center somewhere. San Jose pops to mind - team that is looking to rise, can give him a huge pay day, and he gets to play with Celebrini. On a lesser note, Chicago - if Chicago can convince Marner that the team is poised to rise, and they manage to also sign some other names (maybe Bennett too) - he probably goes there. Carolina will probably offer him a contract after missing out on Rantanen (and making an offer for Marner already).
If Dino's info is true, and he already turned down a 13.5 deal (which I assume would be 8 years), then there is no way he is coming here to Calgary for 13.5 million on 7 years. He either wants a favourable spot, or wants more money, or both. Maybe he thinks he can get 16x7 with the cap about to explode, while being the biggest name available this season.

Gaudreau and Tkachuk took less money to go somewhere else. It wouldn't be totally shocking to see him take the same or 12.5 and end up not in Toronto.
Also he said he wouldn't be discussing contract in season. I think the attempted trade probably sealed his fate in Toronto.

Uh, the post I quoted said he would struggle in the West. Chicago, Anaheim, SJ, LA, Vegas, all in the west last I checked...didn't specify Flames.

It was a Dreger report from a few months back not a recent offer

There aren't any big name UFA's the Flames should be overpaying for.
If Bennett doesn't re-sign, I'd hazard he goes to Toronto. Marner, to Raleigh?

With Gaudreau it's not entirely true.
What I believe happened is this (not to re-litigate it but...):
- Gaudreau (either directly or through his agent) told the Flames what deal he would accept
- The Flames agreed to give him that and thought the deal was signed
- Gaudreau's camp then went quite which was a red flag
- They then told the Flames he would be going to free agency
- When he did, he found the interest to be lower than expected including from teams he was interested in (e.g. Philly)
- At some point the Gaudreau camp re-engaged with the Flames. They were not interested at that stage at re-considering anything
- The Gaudreau camp started to panic and reached out to CBJ to express interest including to get a deal done.
I'm pretty sure that's how things played out. So he didn't take less to play elsewhere because at that time, the Flames deal was no longer on the table. When they turned down the Flames, they did so thinking they could get as good a deal elsewhere (except for the 8 year part)

If I'm Marner and money isn't the main factor, I'm heading to Carolina.
San Jose and Chicago might be building something, but they still feel a few years away.
Utah’s probably five years out from being a playoff team, and there’s still a lot of uncertainty there. Similar vibes in Detroit and Columbus.
The Kings have an aging core and haven’t done much more than the Leafs in recent years.
Carolina just makes sense. They've been consistently competitive, have a solid young core that's already proven itself, and the travel schedule is manageable. Weather’s decent. It’s a quieter market.
Downside being it seems like it's not a super popular destination for players, maybe that’s due to ownership?

They made a huge mistake, and I think New Jersey was offering in the 8's. So yeah it makes sense they panicked and came back to the Flames, and settled on finding a team with cap space like the Jackets.
In cap squeezed league, they made a huge mistake.
Chucky was offered the same 10.5 and signed for 9.5 but he is likely taking more home now anyways with no state tax in Florida.

I don't remember the Flames ever saying they moved on. Treleving gave his incredibly disappointed (and very pissed off) news conference later on July 12th, the day before free agency started, and Gaudreau signed with Columbus the next day. All the back and forth with other teams happened leading up to the 13th, and based on the tone of the news conference, the Flames were still trying up to the end to re-sign him when he formally told them he was going elsewhere.
But although Gaudreau willingly took less money to go to Columbus, as Calgary's offer was apparently the same as what they paid Huberdeau, it was for family reasons, not necessarily because he didn't want to play in Calgary (although one could argue he might not have wanted to play for Sutter any longer).

The Flames said they moved on the next day when Treliving was asked if they would circle back to Johnny.
I heard and Johnny himself acknowledged they circled back to the Flames for a 7 year deal, but everyone in Calgyar was pissed especially Edwards.

Frank and Pat on Flames Talk basically stating the Flames are not going to be big game hunting or really trying to accelerate things. Frank thinks the flames will look for value who might help add some goals.
More about giving the young players a shot. Not surprising overall but good to hear they are not planning the big game hunting in free agency.
They are talking about the trade front and how aggressive the Flames may be this summer or in the coming summers where they go after someone like Cozens who was available this year.
Mason McTavish comes to mind

That's a big surprise as Pat has been pushing hard and often whenever he gets a chance or Bennett is brought up, that he believes the Flames will be putting forward an offer for him. I guess it could be argued that Bennett isn't big game hunting, though I think he is. Perhaps Conroy and team have a change in heart and have decided they're not going to go after him.

I wonder about Marner and Florida....he's buddies with Tkachuk from junior. Would be a fit on that team with Barkov or Lundell as his center.
Panthers have $76.5M and 16 players signed for next season. And then Bob's money ($10M) expires after next year. It's a $95.5M cap hit - so that's $19M to sign 6 players.
If you're Marner would you sign a cheaper 1 year deal in Florida...and then sign an 8 year extension after that for bigger money once Bob's deal is up and the cap goes up to $104M.
If he leaves Toronto though I do think Marner's agent takes a 1+8 approach to this offseason with whatever team tries to sign him in UFA. He can sign a max of 7 with a team right now and that will cover his 28-34 year old seasons but if he does a 1+8 approach he will cover his 28-36 year old seasons.

I think it’s most likely that Rantanen was the guy and they are not interested in anyone else especially when the next guy is a winger as well. Bennett is a 2nd liner and probably has zero interest in coming back here anyway.

That's kind of been the giggly part of this whole conversation. The "big game" phrasing applies to what, 5 UFAs in this class? The rest are the usual either overpaid or too old (sometimes both) kind of player you expect to see hit UFA status. Other than Marner, Boeser, Ehlers, Ekblad (arguably), and Bennett. And of those, only Marner and Bennett are kind of in a tier to themselves due to age and past performance.
But whatever, "big game hunting" it is I guess.

I still think the move if possible is to trade Andersson and bring in a veteran LH d-man in free agency or as a cap dump.
Potential Free Agents:
Gavrikov - 29 years old
Orlov - 33 years old
Lindgren - 27 years old
Potential Trades
Girard - 27 years old - 2 x $5M - rumoured to be on the trade block for a while, gives the Flames an offensive d-man that can help out the PP.
Samuelsson - 25 years old - 5 x $4.3M - defensive d-man that's slotted wrong in Buffalo and needs a change of scenery.
Nic Hague - 26 years old - RFA - Vegas has 5 guys locked up long term on defense, probably can't afford Hague.
Jonas Sigenthaler - 28 years old - 3 x $3.4M - New Jersey has a lot of bodies with Hamilton, Pesce, Dillon, Casey, Hughes, Semec, Kovacevic and are looking to make some changes.
