For me, the only free agents I'd be targeting are a center, and perhaps a depth defender if they trade Andersson. A goalie like Vladar or equivalent would be fine. Jake Allen for example.
I don't really think there is much room unless several people get traded like Coleman and Kadri etc where holes are being opened all over. Having a 2nd/3rd line C is important for this team.

That was exactly my point...thanks for your help. he was trying to say that goals are way more improtant than assists. It was obviously an extreme example just to prove a point. An average player like Debrusk scored more goals than McDavid. The point still works if you want to show their similar goals per game. Obviously all those assists were massive, like I was saying.

Would rather pay for Benzo, than bring in Marchand and Benn.

Marner will go to a US team and do awesome, probably win a cup within the next few years playing a big role. Leafs will not be better (that's a positive) They will dream of the days they were in game 7 of round 2.

No he can’t that’s cap circumvention.
Also Marner is absolutely not worth going above and beyond the max. He should be paid less than Rantanen.

I wouldn't give him max but you can't run a team by "should be less than X player" Like if Rantanen actually got to free agency and was willing to go whever he could have gotten way more. Dallas has team, location, and tax advantages most teams can't match.

Trying to sign Marner is a no brainer for Conroy. Doubt it will happen but if it did it would almost certainly qualify as the best move that Conroy has made as GM.

Yep.
I'm still saying we hear the Flames gave him the biggest contact offer, but he signs elsewhere for less.

Signing Marner (assuming something like $13M+ X 7) would be the first complete mistake that Conroy made. That would be a terrible signing.

Flames are not in a position to be handing out big money long term deals to aging wingers when outside of Coronato and Wolf there isn’t a real core here yet. Parekh and likely Bahl are part of that mix and from the vet standpoint Weegar, Huberdeau and Kadri are locked in for the long term but they will be 32-35 next year.
This is not the summer to go shopping for the high end piece. 2 years from now will make more sense when the team moves into a new rink.
Marner would make sense if this team had a core of young drafted players particularly up the middle and the blueline. Columbus would be a reasonable spot.

This scenario is definitely possible. I suppose Craig can try and sell him on the new arena, young players like Parekh, etc but it's going to be tough as I imagine he would rather play in the US where he can just play and not be a lighting rod for media and fans even though I consider the Calgary market pretty tame as it's not like Huby was getting dogged by fans or media like he would have in markets like Toronto, Montreal, Edmonton, Vancouver.

Would probably be the worst move Conroy would make as GM. Having 24M tied up in wingers, and 6.5M for Coronato and 5M for Farabee.
If we had a Bedard or Celebrini in the pipeline it would make sense.
It will be the same thing again paying for production he had on another team. Not to mention coming out west when he can't handle the eastern playoffs will likely not be pretty.

The only chance I see the Flames having on signing Marner, Bennett, or Ekblad would be mainly due to the players on the team in addition to offering the most money.
For Bennett he is familiar with the city and organization and he has some friends on the team from Florida and a chance to play with Huberdeau again as the top center might entice him. He could have memories that Calgary was the place he could not move forward and he has become a Stanley Cup champ and team Canada player leaving. The Leafs will be all over him if he gets to July 1 and I think the draw to play at home will be too big to pass up. Steinberg and Francis really seem to think the Flames go after Benny if he gets to free agency. Last time I remember Pat going that hard on the Flames interest in a free agent was Markstrom 5 years ago
Ekblad is super tight with Weegar and Huberdeau so if the Flames offered a big salary I could see him taking it to play with his buddies in Canada.
Marner I don’t see it but he and Kadri played together a couple of years and both played for the same junior team (albeit at different times) but they might have more of a relationship than we know. With that said the same thing could be said about Tavares (as it pertains to Kadri).
Can Kadri sell these guys the joys of playing for a passionate fanbase but far less scrutiny? I doubt it but in addition to money, and a new rink that is about all the flames can sell. Wolf is a nice piece as well but probably needs to dominate for another year and be locked up long term

San Jose, Carolina, and Anaheim make way more sense for Marner than the Flames.

haha, Marner will be fine when he leaves the Leafs...more than fine. Just watch. I don't think he is coming to Calgary either but he will be the next Kadri, Kessel ect. 100%

He can go have a great career, but he isn't the right player for this team today. Rantanen wasn't either, but I wont lie here. The thought of Rantanen is exciting when you watch him play, you notice him every shift big 96 making moves. I don't feel that way with Marner.

No one is arguing that Marner is lousy, he simply isn't a good fit for the Flames. When they're finally competitive, he will be a 32-25 year old cap anchor.

I do wonder if he'll look at Carolina now and think why not. Won't catch 1/100th of the shade he gets in Toronto and they are a successful team. Still in the East and it's still a friendly tax area with favorable weather.
