Zadarov is like Bowser in Mario Kart. Once he gets going he is fast

Except it's not. Money in the future is literally worth less, due to inflation.

Apick will buy the same thing then, that it does now

When Treliving traded a third to get a younger Zadorov with one year till UFA the deal was panned pretty hard. Now that he's being shipped out it's getting panned again.

He's a #5 defenceman who can make some big hits and flashes more at times. He's also an adventure when he tries to do too much. I don't think he should have been in the long term plan so no problem moving him.

It's not a great return, but I think it's still really under estimated how difficult making deals to move full salaries is.

Can we judge Conroy by not knowing what other GMs had on the table? No. Totally unfair.

Did you read this post in a Peter Loubardias classic self-question and answer interview style? Well, one word = do it.

Big Z put him in a tough situation, he had to deal him, had to take the best of what was out there this far out from trade deadline (and looks he probably wanted to leave the 3 slots for retaining salary open).
2 picks. Let our amateur scouts do their thing (just don't pull a Jake Boltmann please, lads).
Sit back and watch Big Z both excite and infurate Nucks brass and fanbase. Move on.
Signing Ethan Bear could be some Conroy 4D chess, maybe...

Plus, perspective (if not a fata):

Not to mention the Zad explosion of goals last season is dialled back to 1 in 21 GP this season...

The return is similar to what the Canucks got for Luke Schenn last year who is a superior player to Zadorov.

Maybe Flames could get a 3rd rounder this year at the deadline instead of two picks now.

It’s underwhelming because people set unrealistic expectations.

Yikes. He really could #### this thing up big time couldnt he?
Trading a mediocre dman for a 3rd and a 5th is not bad let alone flat out embarrassing. It is mediocre.

Thanks, I know our top defencemen when I see them. Phaneuf was clearly our top defenceman when he played for us.

The returns have been underwhelming in this market for a while now. It is what it is, the timing is just bad for selling players, unfortunately for the Flames. If they retain, I think they'd get potentially a lot more.

What the heck is Conroy doing trading to a division rival and for peanuts? I thought Big-Z would get at least a second rounder.

Sounds like Conroy has a specific guy on the Wranglers he wants a long look at. Have to think its Soloyov

I’m disappointed by the return, but how many teams has Zad played for now? A former 1st round pick, outspoken, mistake prone, publicly stated he wanted to stay in the offseason but wasn’t made an offer despite having 3 future UFA D in the top 5. From Conroys perspective maybe he couldn’t wait for ANY reasonable offer and this is actually addition by subtraction. Just speculation by me trying to understand why this trade for this return had to happen this early in the season.

Conroy is doing exactly what he said he would do, not have a situation where UfAs left for nothing. I expect him to continue doing what he said he would do. I am happy it was draft picks and not a some middling prospect, have way more faith in our amateur scouting staff to find players.

Value aside I don't think the Flames are any worse the way Zadorov has been playing

As my Dad used to say to me when I was a kid...you know what thought did...crapped his bed and thought his pillow did it.

I love the comment he made about giving up a 3rd to get him and getting a 3rd and a 5th in return. I dont know in what world we were magically going to get more for him than what we paid to acquire him (i.e 2nd). You take what you can and move on and hope the young D (Solovyov?) can do an equal or better job

Conroy desperate to send a message to the team that if you want out we will trade you. Most teams aren't looking to make trades this early into the season so he had to take a smaller return. At least the league now knows the Flames are open for business. Hopefully it results in more conversations with other GMs so we can unload Hanifin next.
