Well that’s the quintessential definition of a bandwagon fan.

Frickin' awful. Basically no savings, so it's not worth it.
This year's buyout window is closed, so the earliest he could be bought out would be next June, with 3 years remaining on the contract. After a buyout, his cap hit for the final three seasons would be: $5.5M, $4M, and $5.5M instead of $6M each year. There would also be a $500,000 cap hit for three additional years.
The Oilers portion of that would be a percentage equal to whatever percentage of his salary they retain in the trade.

Had an idea!
|
At 10% retention the cap hit is less, right?
So if they got him to waive his NMC completely, then it is a better deal than having Neal here next year.
If we get a draft pick out of it, even better.
To me it doesn't necessarily come down to which player is better, they both suck. It is about which contract is easier to manage after all is said and done.

Even if the NMC were operative for the expansion draft, there'd be no chance in hell that it cost them Andersson; they'd trade him first. And if the worst move in franchise history costs you Andrew Mangiapane, well, you've had one heck of a strong run from your GMs.

That, and "first place in the Western Conference" probably played a role.

This was my immediate reaction - "Oh, okay. They're both terrible, so if the Flames manage to get a pick out of it and the salary evens out, they just get out from under their anchor a year sooner". I was surprised to see they're equal length, although when I think about it, yeah, Lucic was signed for 7x6 in 2016. I think I had him confused with Loui Eriksson.
So there you go Treliving, go ahead and flip him for Eriksson!
... In all seriousness, if the rumoured retention and pick are true (based on what I've read in here, EDM retains $600k and provides a conditional mid-round pick, which I assume will be based on Lucic playing X number of games) then I dunno. It's kind of garbage in, garbage out. If the NMC goes by the wayside, they can bury him in the minors, and if you were going to do that with Neal anyway, then it's pretty much pure upside.

17-18 99 226 52 games

You've been "done" with them quite a few times, I think you just enjoy the drama of announcing it. Either be a fan, with all that entails, or quietly move on to something else.

I hope that you don't approach everything in your life like this, sincerely.
If so, I imagine you have quite an unhappy (or now destroyed) marriage, you probably are not very nice to your children, and I can't see how you would manage success at work.
The point of being a fan is to struggle and suffer with the team while they build up to the success. If you hop in after they've found the success, you have missed the most rewarding part of being a fan, and you won't taste the sweetness of victory in the same way. I ask you again, why are you here?

I don't know about this one.
I mean Lucic is slower then molasses and his hands are gone.
But as of now, he's a bit cheaper then Neal, and we get a pick out of it.
This comes down to the effect of the NMC and if he has to be protected in the expansion draft. But I don't think he does.
I had high hopes for Neal, and thought I would be ok if he got another kick at the can. But the Flames had plenty of scoring without him.
If this creates an ahole line with Bennett and Lucic, then I'm ok with that, the Flames need way more abrasion in their lineup. We saw too much non response from this team when the action got heavy.
Its to me not a great trade or a good trade . . . but it is a trade and it might shake up the locker room a bit and give the Flames less physical players a little bit more courage.
Plus the Oilers are paying over 6 million bucks a year for Neal basically.

You can only save 900K by putting a 1 way contract in the minors.

For the Off-Topic board, lots of good discussions there. I've barely clicked on the hockey side since the playoffs ended, apart from today's insanity

I believe it's 1.1 million now. Which isn't nothing, especially if by burying the player you're making your team better.

All about expectations. I expected Neal to be an average NHLer, and he never came close. I expect Lucic to be brutal, so there's a good chance he meets those expectations.

Neal did not like playing in Calgary, I can't imagine his mindset when he plays in Edmonton.

Your team is still no good. And Neal's play will now match his team.
