Details - may not be something you want to know about the scene.

Should we keep the details to a minimum? Some people may not want to know exactly what happened to their friends?

I'm pretty sure the max sentence isn't 25 years. He could be eligible for parole then, but I doubt he ever gets out.

I've got a fair amount of self-defense experience and knowledge, pretty much every teacher will tell you that you can't defend against a knife. There is nothing to do against someone who is aggressively attacking with one, the only thing that works is running away, and... well I don't want to talk about this anymore just trust me there's probably nothing they could have done.

With a party going, people may have been segregated throughout the house and outside. With maybe some music playing and alcohol involved, I can see how he could have gotten around to a bunch of people in a short timeframe.
Plus, you're at a house party having a great time among friends and your guard is totally down so the accused would totally have an advantage there if he wanted to sneak up on someone.
I'm sure when people realized what was going down they'd get out of there ASAP instead of try to fight a guy with a knife.
|
If that were the case I don't blame them I would do the same thing as well. Though if that were the case they must have seen the attack and they can come to police and confirm the attacker.

Reporters are the worst. My friend has been contacted six times in the past hour just from sending out one tweet.

I am not very confident in the Canadian justice system but hopefully he never gets paroled

What makes you think this exact scenario hasn't happened? What are you going on about?

pretty sure witnesses helped police track down the guy, I don't think there is any question about his guilt

Its not the max sentence, but rather, he'd be eligible for parole after 25 years unless a court imposes parole ineligibility (new from the 2011 amendments) or declares him a dangerous offender.

Because he is an armchair Superman who knows how he'd handle a situation and using the power of not-facts™ would disarm all attackers on sight.
I wouldn't engage this guy, he's right up there with the Blood Moon person from earlier.

I think details are important. But definitely as long as there is a tag or warning or something.

Would he get consecutive life sentences if he were found guilty of all 5 first degree murders? How would that work?

If you want to start some intellectual debate where you play the contrarian for ****'s and giggles because you think you're smarter than everyone, maybe start another thread. I'm sure people will be more than happy to engage you there. In here, there's something a little more tragic and newsworthy being discussed.

The media, as usual, is not distinguishing themselves at all. From what I have read, it appears that just about anyone who had anything to do with him at all in the past 10 years is being hounded by journalists.

If the speculation is right, and that this was more over a girl, and less to do with something purely psychotic, it would lend some credence to my earlier thesis that this was a primarily ego-fueled crime. I really think it is needlessly sentimental to pathologize all violent crime.

Everybody says this and it kind of drives me up the wall a bit. Where were the hero's here? Most times when people see that first person get stabbed and their fight or flight instinct kicks in, and 99% of the time man its flight.
Most people's first thought is not to attack the guy with the sharp object.
Almost Nobody keeps cool in a chaotic environment with people screaming and crying and dying.
Would I charge? Maybe but I have a death wish, if I had a girlfriend or buddy at the party I'd be pushing them away and out the door.
This stabbing probably took seconds. Its not like a horror movie where he slowly stalks victimes while funky 80's horror disco plays in the background.

Yes they are. My family were victims of a crime with a far better outcome about 13 years ago but the nature of the crime was such that it was big news. A reporter came to the door and asked for comment and I told her I had none. Then she tried to bait me by telling me "What the neighbors are saying about you."
I wanted to punch her.
