So you're arguing that the returns the Canucks got here were less valuable than a 795k cap savings? Is that about right? At 5.3m the Panthers don't want him, but at 4.5 they'll give up a 3c and their best goalie prospect?
LOL

That $8.5M will be spread out over the remaining years that Luongo WOULD have played if he had played out the end of his deal. So, the sooner he retires, the smaller the cap penalty, but the more years they have to deal with it. If he retires later, the penalty isn't around for as long, but it's a higher amount.
So, if he retires with 2 years left, they have a 4.25M cap anchor on them for 2 years. If with 1 year left, they have 8.5M in space locked up on them for that year. Those are the two worst scenarios. More likely, he'll retire a bit before that and it'll be something like 2.8M for three years or 2.1M for four.
|
that's crazy. that could be a disaster down the road should the canucks be a competitive team, where they have a 4 million buck cap space anchor that ddidn't even contribute to the team for years!

Lack has already outplayed Luongo while playing teams like the St. Louis Blues consecutivley.

MAF won a gold sitting in the stands as well. Doesn't make him great.

gillis responds by saying January was a tough month... Their coach got suspended, they weren't playing well without him, giving up leads, etc. Made it sound like a major contributing factor to their losing streak and hence the "retool" and hence the Luongo trade.
Basically, Lu has Hartley to thank for the trade! canucks fans can thank him for the "retool" too!

Thank-you Hartley!

it's just awesome that the flames can be looked at as the turning point to killing the canucks hopes this season.
it's also awesome that hopefully this makes the panthers a better team and that they leap frog the flames (and stay above) in the standings.

Luongo performed well with an equally pathetic defense the last time he was there. Thomas putting up better numbers than a guy like Markstrom there. So not all the defense's fault.

Lack has played 25 games. Plenty of goalies have had short term success mas the back-up. Certainly didn't look like he was outplaying anyone on Sunday. That was a very weak outing.

Hard to think of 10 goalies that are better than him.

It certainly doesn't but considering that has nothing to do with Luongo not sure why you keep bringing it up. MAF also was on the Olympic team a year after winning a Stanley Cup and going to the finals for a 2nd straight year so you trying to down play him as a bad goalie is a pretty weak analogy.

Those people were wrong and biased against him because he was a Canuck.
If he would have passed through waivers than at least 10 GM's should have been fired on the spot and more should have had egg on their faces.
The Hockey Canada brass, that most people would argue has some hockey knowledge, had faith in him to bring him in and potentially have him as the starting goalie. Even with his contract I would take their view of his hockey ability and value to a team over internet hockeyboard posters.

How old was Luongo then? I think you should go look at the trends with Luongo's stats over the past years as a Canuck. Tim Thomas is putting up crap numbers with a crap defense- this is not really ground breaking stuff.

You mean like when Schneider was doing pretty much the exact same thing Lack is doing right now even though Lack is playing behind a much worse defense?

This is a good deal for the Panthers. They gave up very little for him. Markstrom may still turn out into a #1 goalie, but he's closer to being an expendable prospect than "best" prospect.
I wouldn't say this is a terrible deal for the Canucks. They really weren't going anywhere with Luongo in net.
The person that benefitted most from this deal is Luongo's wife.

you took my comment out of context...I wasn't saying that is what they should have done I was responding to an asinine comment. They should have traded Lou last season and kept Schnider
whatever I am quite pleased how it has worked out

Not sure how old he is.
Is your best argument Luongo is older now? Is that supposed to be groundbreaking news to anyone?

Nope that doesn't really look the same at all.

Buying out Luongo would have been a moronic move.
Not asking the moon for him when trying to deal him would have been the smart move.
Not screwing him around the first time, let alone again now with the outdoor game would have been the smart move.
Buying him out would have been a waste of money and an asset.

It shouldn't be, but you don't seem to understand that aging goalies who perform well are and exception- not a rule.
