Water Valley - solid layout on an interesting piece of land. Good value.

On the topic of Gem courses, anyone played in Oahu, Hawaii?
Going in November and hoping to play a couple of rounds.

for those of you out there that have memberships - do you feel you golf at a breakeven rate as a minimum? Does your golf frequency vary much from year to year?
my wife is really enjoying golfing this year, and I am thinking about the viability of a membership (annual pass - as i am not looking to buy equity/shares anywhere) for both of us for next season. I am currently buying the golf calgary card and so far it has seemed like a nice compromise.

What do you consider "breakeven"? I've played a lot more golf since I purchased a membership, and it's really not close. I can't recommend it enough to people, if you want to golf.
The thing is, it's a sunk cost. So you pay the cash and it's "free" to go play a round. Then you add in that you make friends where you play and there's that social aspect. And of course, you get addicted...or at least if you're me you do.
Financially speaking, I don't really aim to get a certain amount of rounds in and figure out whether I've come out ahead. I just know that I've played a lot of golf and it feels like a good value. I know people who pay the same amount as I do and play literally 5-6 rounds a year. That seems entirely not worth it to me.

I’m gonna be in the Vancouver area for a few days by myself with time on my hands, was thinking of bringing the golf clubs and playing some courses. I have played Northlands, both northview courses, and Morgan Creek in the past, but was looking to see if CP intel have any recommendations for other public courses in the Vancouver area that are must plays. Don’t mind spending good coin for a good golf course, any suggestions are appreciated!

Westwood Plateau in Coquitlam is the first that comes to mind and I always liked Riverway in Burnaby.

Morgan Creek in Surrey is a bit on the pricier side, but I really liked that one. Kings Links in Delta is fun if you like links golf.

Thanks for the suggestion! Westwood looks nice, but looks like they aren’t allowing single bookings at this time I’ll look into riverway though!

Yes, I like Morgan Creek as well. Never tried Kings Links, I may end up trying it this time around. Thanks for the suggestion!

The muni courses Fraserview & McCleery (not Langara) are actually pretty decent if you can get on. They book up weeks in advance, but as a single you might be able to find a spot.
Mayfair Lakes in Richmond & Redwoods in Langley are courses where you can usually get on. Mayfair has tons of water in stupid places though, so bring cheap balls.

If you wanna do a drunk round I remember Savage Creek was great fun. Only 15 holes and it's basically a par 3 course, but still fun (I was drunk so maybe not as fun sober?).

Oh god, I remember I actually have played Mayfair before, tried to block it out of my memory. You’re right, lots of dumb water spots.
I heard good things about Fraserview as well. Thanks for validating that!

I like alcohol, and I like golf. Savage Creek sounds like a good option to have, thanks!

Played Water Valley last year for the 1st time in many years. really enjoyed it. This year we are looking to go back and perhaps do a 36 hole day and also play Tooth of the Dog Pound. Is it worth playing?

personally, i'd consider breakeven to be how many rounds would i need to play to make my cost about the smae if i was paying as i go or paying in a lump sum.
i could see golfing more if i had a pass as there would not be the perceived barrier of paying for it everytime i show up at the course. especially during the july when the days are longer.

But there are other benefits that also need to be considered beyond 'breakeven'.
1) social aspect
2) practice facilities
3) club storage
4) better tee times and more availability (typically)
5) tournaments and events
6) league

Well, I'm too embarrassed to say what my per round cost would be. If someone worked backwards and realised how bad I am, and how many rounds I've played, they might be appalled! I'll just say that I'm firmly into a discount scenario and there's still at least 6 more week this season.

Yeah and those things are well worth the membership, in my opinion. I really like playing the leagues and the club storage is such a great extra.
