Cliff Pennington doubled to deep right. No hitter comes to end in the eighth.

Stephen Strasburg has called out Bryce Harper.

Quote:
"If [Harper] wants to play here, he's going to play here," Strasburg said Sunday, after pitching five innings in the Nationals' win over Arizona. "He doesn't need advice from anybody to convince him otherwise. If he doesn't want to play here, then we don't want him here."

I don't watch that much Rays baseball so for those that do.. how the hell do they win?

I see them get swept by the Jays, lost to the Orange wearing O's and are losing again tonight. They just seem ordinary, no power, decent hitting, decent pitching but nothing special. They been no hit or almost no hit a bunch of times.

How have they won 70+ games?

They have 5 starters who all go 6 innings every game, and the best bullpen in the league. They also lead the league in steals, and at a rate of 80%. They walk a ton too!

Price is arguably the Cy Young in the American League, and Garza threw a no hitter 3 weeks ago..... A bit better then nothing special!

Must be me, everytime I see their bullpen, it blows up!
They're making a nice comeback right now though!

Carlos Pena does make a difference in their lineup too. He hadn't been slugging at the rate he had in previous years, but he had been a decent OPS guy who gave a guy like Longoria a bit of protection.

Also don't forget Jeff Niemen on that starting staff. When you have three really good starters, and than a bullpen of Cormier, Wheeler, Balfor, Benoit, and Soriano that alone will give you a chance to win your share of ball games. Even their 4-5 guys Shields, and Davis are above average for those roles. Any team who have 3 guys in the bullpen at this point in the season with 40+ innings pitched and ERA's of 2.08 or better is likely contending. Hellickson has also given them 3 fantastic starts, and Sonnestine would be a 4-5 starter on any team not named the Rays, Yankees, or Red Sox.

Ok I'll try to watch them more.

Just seems when they lose they look really bad. A team of extremes perhaps.

Currently tied as the best team in baseball too now after tonight.

I hate watching them play the Jays....those guys just don't go away; no lead is ever safe.

Looks like the Nationals could become a better team down the road with his power and Strasburg pitching.

I hope Lance Armstrong is paying attention.

Sounds like Clemons has decided that defending his legacy, no matter how short the odds, is more important to him than avoiding jail time.

Is Bonds next?

Lou Piniella is retiring this afternoon after the game instead of after the season to spend more time with his family. Third base coach Mike Quade will manager the final 38 games.

http://sports.espn.go.com/chicago/ml...ory?id=5483775

Quote:
"I need to be home," Piniella said before Saturday's 5-4 victory over Atlanta. "My circumstances have changed a heck of a lot the last year, especially the last month or so. I just need to be home."
Quote:
"I'm concerned about my mom," Piniella said Saturday. "I love baseball but I love my family. When you talk about your family, it's a little more important than baseball, it's a lot more important."

And he's got some AAA Canadian baseball experience.

From wikipedia:

Quote:
After retiring as a player, Quade was named the manager of the Macon Pirates, who he managed in 1985 and 1986. He managed the Rockford Expos in 1989 and 1990, the Harrisburg Senators in 1991 and 1992, the Ottawa Lynx in 1993, the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Red Barons in 1994 and 1995, the West Michigan Whitecaps in 1996, the Huntsville Stars in 1997, the Edmonton Trappers in 1998, the Vancouver Canadians in 1999, and the Iowa Cubs from 2003-2006.

Pinella has always been one of my favorite people in baseball. As a Reds and Mariners fan, he's managed one of my teams for a large part of my life.

Congratulations on a great career, Sweet Lou!

It's unfortunate he didn't get tossed from his last game.
