I think the players understand when you bring a player like Huberdeau and his history he is going to be paid, how else would we keep him?
Rhett is also a guy who was overpaid and came to camp out of shape all the time.

I don't imagine guys caring too much about new signings getting paid. That said, when a guy who just got paid on a fresh long-term contract to come in as a leader is playing like he's out there to lose down the stretch in the team's final push to make the playoffs, I would guess guys who have their own upcoming contract renewals would think twice about committing to a situation with him as a long-term teammate and part of your leadership core.

Exactly this. Vegas has been willing to boot any off their team if they think they can improve and since they are a new team they basically have no one who came up together on the roster.
I still contend this all basically boils down to Markstrom tanking it against the Oilers in the playoffs and then again last year. If the high paid goalie doesn't become the one of the worst goalies in the league - who knows what happens against the Oilers and where this team goes last year. I suspect they'd all be pals if they finished up in the middle of the playoff teams instead of puttering around in 9th.

I can't wait until we're good and talented, playing in the newest NHL barn, and we blow out whichever team Hanifin (and other flakers) run to in embarrassing fashion.
The faithful Flames will be rewarded in due time.

Just trade Lindholm.
If you have to go over $9M it's not worth it.
But Murray Edwards loves to save face...so probably will try to overpay here.

Because Lindholm needs two 100 pt all stars on his wings to be a ppg player. He is not a play driver and frankly not good enough in the playoffs.

Trade everyone who doesn’t want to be here. Package futures, retain, etc. to try and offload any or all of Kadri, Huby, and Markstrom. Scorched earth. Take the pain now.

Hanifin was willing sign but in the Nurse price range. There was no appetite from Flames side so now we’re at where we are at.

Everything you said here has absolutely nothing to do with Lindholm's current market value being in the same range as a player like Timo Maier.

He's a good complimentary player, but I don't think he can be relied on to be your number 1 center. I also don't think he should be relied on to be your 2nd best forward. The Flames would be foolish to add him to their list of long average contracts. They need to shed these not add them.

Jersey can and should pay Timo Maier that contract. Perfect time for them to pay big money with their young core that’s setup to win for years.
Calgary should not be paying Lindholm. Completely different situation.

Yeah it's a completely different situation when you look at who the Flames have locked up until they are 36+ versus the Devils. Not even comparable IMO.

So... given this recent news who has to be the leading candidate for captain now? Ras? Weegar?

Raz should be captain even if everyone was staying.

Absolutely, we have enough cash tied up in Kadri and Huberdeau for a team destined to be a disappointment next year. I'd rather keep lindholm around the 5 mil mark, but he won't sign for that, so it's time to part ways and get some picks for him.
