Badger Bob did win a cup in 1991 with the Pens

Gonna throw a name out there with some tinfoil hatting:
Ray Edwards.
Who? Head coach of Phoenix' AHL affilliate between 2010-2015, Assistant between 2007-2010. Current Flames Player Development Coach.
Why? As AGM, Treliving was GM of Phoenix' AHL affilliate in his time there, and hired him there. We've already poached him. Here's something interesting:
” "sometimes you, show loyalty in one way and it works out in another." After looking closely at a head coaching position with a major-junior team, he and Calgary Flames G.M. Brad Treliving, “chatted and found a way to work something out.” Edwards pointed out, “Brad and I go way back to AA in hockey… he ran the Central Hockey League as president – (he) hired me to AA then 4 or 5 years later hired me in Arizona.”
This guy is essentially Brad's "right-hand-man". We've established Treliving is not happy with the defensive systems we used. The Coyotes organization Brad was with, was and still is pretty happy with Tippett's defensive systems, and it would make sense for Treliving to Tippett-ize the Flames after being dead last in goals against.
Which players of note played in the AHL under Edwards?
Mikkel Boedker
David Schlemko
Kyle Turris
Oliver Ekman-Larsson
Louis Domingue
Tobias Rieder
Michael Stone
Connor Murphy
Rob Klinkhammer
Do we have any commentary from Brad on Edwards' coaching? I just found an interview from soon after Brad promoted Edwards to HC:
"Ray (and other assistant) came in and changed how this team played- giving it a defensive consciousness and the style of the play that we've been playing here has given us a chance to be in games. I commend the job the coaches have done. The players are buying in. Similar style to the philosophy played up in Phoenix (with Tippett). It's the way you gotta play - a lot of one goal games. That's the kind of hockey played in the playoffs."
That said, I'm not sure Tippett's systems are exactly what Treliving is looking for offensively. Tippett hasn't coached a positive possession team in two years himself, and Treliving obviously wants puck possession. But I do think we should pay attention to this name.

^ You could definitely be on to something. Sounds like boring hockey tho. Wouldn't mind him in a defence coach position.

I think he wants a coach that will be more aggressive in the defensive zone to quicken turnovers and restore possession.

I hope that you are correct, because I for one am tired of watching us continually get hemmed in our own zone for extended periods. Kevin was the only one who would take the body and get the puck back.
Two points to note. Kevin was not touted as a physical defenseman when he came over, yet instantly played like our most physical one. Engelland has the tools and ability to be yet he wasn't.
This leads to the second point that Kevin was the most physical d-man because he wasn't around long enough to learn our stupid system.
I want the other team to have to pay in blood sweat and bruises for every second they spend in our zone. Not be given the outside track for free.

It's too bad that we might lose Kevin in the expansion draft.

So Treliving's "Wiesbrod?"
I hope they bring in someone new, but someone with a little better better track record in the area of winning.

I was discussing this in the World Championship thread, but what about bringing in a top European coach, more specifically: Jukka Jalonen
Thinking outside of the box is high risk, high reward - but the man has a strong track record and we love our Finns! The Lightning thought outside the box and now have one of the best young coaches in the league IMO. Jukka speaks english, has a great track record and comes from arguably the top up-and-coming development system in the world.

The first Finnish coach to lead the Finnish Lions to a World Championship title, this year he led the Finnish juniors to World Junior gold. He won the SM-Liiga championship with HPK in 2006 and was awarded the Kalevi Numminen trophy as Coach of the Year for that season.
He has expressed interest in coaching in NHL but say that his network is not up to par and that he would have to start as an assistant coach [IIHF IceTimes, January 2016, p.25]. Jalonen is a very intriguing coach with lots of success at many levels, and an NHL team would be smart to bring him in for any position.

Yeah I've met Francis in person and could at least sit and have a drink with him. As for Cox I simply don't like the man at all and don't believe there's much substance there that would change that in person.

Ridiculous to call any coach a front runner when the search is essentially one day old and few if any interviews conducted. Once some names come out and interview news then the media can come out with their frontrunner declarations but anything right now is just made up crap like Francis last week.

Even a Kevin Dineen would basically fit this mould. Will be interesting to see if Treliving opts for this route.

The Flames are not going to promote Huska to head coach. He didn't exactly do a stellar job in Stockton last year.

Good post, thanks.
Can't see him as a candidate for the head coaching job, but quite possibly one of the assistants. At the very least, someone we should be more aware of as a rising member of the organization.

If anyone is interested, The Coaches Site has a $12, 30 day subscription option.
Lowry gives a talk, Travis Green does an interview. I haven't listened to the Lowry talk yet, but Chris Snow's presentation on the Flames Analytics was impressive.
There is over 40 hours of material from previous coaches conferences as well. If you have the time to listen/watch these talks it's well worth the $12 from my perspective.

Just a general question to the board: are there any european coaches that have moved to the NHL successfully? Off the top of my head, I can't name one.
I'm guessing the larger ice results in vastly different strategies, making it hard to just bring in a coach and his "system."

It's hard to imagine the Flames being completely boring with Johnny and 3 top offensive Dmen. At the very least they should have a heck of a counterstrike capability.
