Funny thing though, Flames who really hated Skinkaruk is coming back on the trade.

The Canucks are trying to rebuild on the fly. Vey, Baertschi, Granlund, Clendenning are 4 players that were 22 years old when acquired with draft picks or younger prospects.
Canucks now have Sedin, Sutter, Horvat, Granlund, McCann at centre one will be shifted to the wing but then is Granlund the 4th line C?

The one thing that struck me watching some highlights and his NHL Draft video and interview when Hunter was selected was the agreement that he is off the charts with compete level. Compete 5/5 at draft.
If this guy has a major attitude problem I doubt he would score so high on compete! Benning said today that Shinkaruk was not a problem in Utica. He never complained.
Hunter also scored 100 goals in 3 seasons more than Kirby Rychel (88) or Sean Monahan (84) at that draft.
On the highlights he scores many highlight goals with his backhand shot which has a super quick release. Great speed too.
Granlund never had that compete level and is not as gifted with his shot.
Treliving said it best, there was a real risk that Granlund would have to be sent down next year when other centres pass him on depth chart. Resulting in him being waived and lost for nothing.
I will take my chances with Shinkaruk's development instead. We have two years to see if he can find a home as our 2nd line LW.
Should help to push Klimchuk and Poirier too...

So the Canucks HfBoards thread on the trade officially has a part 2. Can't wait to read this!

Ummm I guess but that would be really odd. Granlund was a poor winger, can't him getting better suddenly playing his off wing.

I was one of the ones who felt we should take Shinkaruk at the draft, but I'm pretty meh about this trade. It was becoming clear Granlund wasn't going to be a big part of the future, so I appreciate the asset management.

Good asset management by Treliving.
I don't know who will be the better player but we got a couple of years of waiver free status while the Canucks got a young player who is NHL ready, just not on the Flames.

Having him and Bennett together should be a real treat to watch with that tenacity.

I don't know a lot about Shinkaruk but he's pretty small to be playing with an edge in the NHL. Of course Fleury managed to do it.

Well no #### Sherlock.
My initial knee jerk reaction to the trade was "I don't like it" and then thought to myself "Well Granlund for a second is pretty good" and "Well Baertschi for Shinkaruk is pretty good too"
I'm sure other people initially had the same train of thought and justified it the same away

I'm not sure if people here missed the 2015 draft, but that 2nd acquired for Baertschi has a name - it's Rasmus Andersson. And he's a pretty good player.

Yeah too bad. It would be unfair to draft a Finn with such a language barrier in the room.
Gonna have to do the polite thing now and take Matthews instead.

I have to admit I don't know much of Hunter Shinkaruk. Only I know is he is from Calgary and heard he played bantam hockey for the Calgary Royals. I never heard of him until the draft days. I read some stuff on the Pre-Draft and I read some bad stuff about him from CP posters after he got drafted by the Canucks. Looking forward in knowing this kid. Sucks that we lost Granlund because I really like him. Unfortunately he is playing the numbers game here in Calgary. Too many centremen to beat to be with the Flames. I am glad he will get some chances somewhere else but I wish it is not with the Canucks. I would have thought he would end up playing with his brother in Minnesota someday.

If we don't sign a replacement winger for our top 6 with the likely departure of Hudler, then I'd say it's pretty much open game for Poirier, Shinkaruk, Jankowski and Agostino. What may give him an edge is his goal scoring ability. If he can show that ability in the preseason then it could force the team's hand.
But my hope is we see a few of the kids showcased post-deadline.

Though I do like Granlund, I like this deal for the Flames for the longterm - gotta go with the longterm upside potential...
