The odds of the Flames picking 1st or 2nd (assuming they finish dead last) = 100%.
In this draft, I contend that there is no difference between the 1st or 2nd pick.

As long as they finish last, they are guaranteed at worst to draft second overall right? I'm ok with that. Either way, they'll draft someone good.

I agree with that, I was just saying that the odds are they will not pick first. 2nd is fine by me as well.

Knowing the Flames luck, they will finish last and not get the top pick. I honestly think that will happen.

ODDS are we pick in the top 3, which could very well result in MacKinnon still.
Depending on who drafts 1st, that could be Jones. 2nd is looking to possibly be Drouin. Even at 3rd we could be drafting MacKinnon.
Honestly never thought we'd be bad enough to draft from 30th... but the way they're playing (and our schedule is only getting worse) a high lottery is looking probable.

At this point, I don't think I'd be happy with just the first overall pick. This team needs multiple first round picks this year to wash the sour taste out of my mouth.

I still think MacKinnon goes 1st overall.

I agree, it's imperative that the Flames come out of the deadline with at least one additional first rounder.
It's really too bad they had to give up this year's 2nd rounder in the Cammy deal. That would have been nice to have. Oh well.

One step closer...
If Colorado beats Dallas and Florida beats New Jersey tomorrow, Flames in 30th.

Not this Flames fan.

Call me crazy but you've only been cheering for the team to finish 9-11 the last three years.....really what's the difference? There have been next to no playoff hopes for this team the last two years. A lottery pick would finally be a step in the right direction.

figures, the one year the Flames suck enough to finish dead last is the year that they change how the draft lottery works

We could still finish in 3rd place and a team higher up wins the lottery pushing us to 4th and we'll still end up with an elite player. If Barkov, Drouin, MacKinnon and Jones were all in a different draft class they're all #1 picks, so we'll do out really well.
With a couple more guaranteed losses coming up, we'll have a stronghold on 29th place. I don't think anyone is catching Florida, but they may go with Drouin to play with Huberdeau (who I believe he played with in the Juniors).
I really like Jones, but we need MacKinnon or Barkov more in my opinion. As long as I've been alive the Flames have never had a #1 center. That is quite sad.

I cannot believe the talk about Barkov over MacKinnon.
Yes, Barkov is big and that is good. And yes, Barkov is playing in a men's league. But who gives a crap what league they are playing in? I don't care how 'NHL ready' they are.
I want the best player.
MacKinnon has explosive speed. Explosive. And his work ethic has been called off the charts.
Size is great. BUt I'll take work ethic (read: leadership) and explosive skating every time.

Who says Barkov doesn't have good work ethic? He also has high hockey IQ. You make it sound like hes lazy or something which couldn't be farther from the truth.

Well, I can't compare prospects personally, but there must be a reason why MacKinnon has been consistently ranked in a higher group than Barkov. I'm sure you have to take MacKinnon if you can.

For arguments sake lets say the picks end up being:
1st - Florida
2nd - Colorado
3rd - Calgary
4th - Tampa
Move 1 - Send Gio or JayBo + 1st 2014 to TB for 4th Overall 2013
Move 2 - Send 4th Overall + 3rd Round pick 2013 + 4th Round pick 2014 to Colorado for 2nd overall
Then the draft looks like:
1st- Florida
2nd - Calgary
3rd - Calgary
4th - Colorado
One could dream right?
|
Or we could draft MacKinnon and Barkov. Two #1 centers in one swift draft. The next Crosby and Malkin.
Oh how I can dream.

You'll have to highlight where I said he was lazy because I missed that.
Barkov's skating has been described - by more than one scouting report - as: average / needs work / not as good as some / pretty good etc.
MacKinnon's skating is described as excellent and explosive.
Barkov is big, but show me quotes describing him as a physical player. Show me quotes that praise his work ethic as off the charts.
I never once called him lazy or anything close to that. However, I have pointed out that MacKinnon's work ethic has been praised and highlighted.
On my firat line, I don't want a wrecking ball, I want leaders. I want my firat line to be not only talented, but also the hardest working guys on teh team. I think we'll have that with Baertschi. And it looks pretty certain that you would get that with MacKinnon. Show me why I should be as confident about that with Barkov.
