Funding chart... demonstrates nicely the initial impact of the Hornet event.

Sigh... Super Hornet.
Has anybody melted their Colonel package Hornet for one of these? I'm still not clear if I lose that package if I melt the original Hornet.

You lose whatever you melt, but you don't lose your backer bonuses (15 mil goal, 16 mil goal, etc.)
Rule of thumb is, always have at least one package with alpha/beta access, and if you melt the only package you have with it, make sure you get another that has it.

Just buy the Super Hornet upgrade, don't melt your existing package

Star Citizen breaks $25 million, unlocking:
Quote:
Enhanced Alpha – We will use additional funding to build a wider alpha test than we had originally intended for the first phase of Star Citizen’s launch. The initial plan was to first launch servers in North America and then expand to areas such as Europe and Australia to decrease latency in these areas, perfecting the game as we improve the experience around the world. This funding will allow us to invest in a wider infrastructure for our early testing, spinning up remote servers earlier. Hitting this goal will also allow us to increase the number of remaining alpha slots. Extra alpha slots not only means more Star Citizens will travel the ‘verse at launch, but that we will receive more feedback and more stress testing. This in turn will allow us to better balance and enhance the Star Citizen experience!

27 million dollar goal announced
Quote:
Banu Merchantman Unlocked – Banu traders are renowed for their merchant prowess, traveling the spacelanes and trading with everyone from humans to the Vanduul! Their sturdy, dedicated trading ships are prized beyond all other transports, sometimes passing from generation to generation of Banu. At $23 million we dedicated additional resources to making Xi’An spacecraft a unique experience. At $27 million, we will expand that same thinking to the Banu! Starting with the merchant ship, the design team will expand Banu technology to offer players a completely different way of experiencing their universe.
|
And for those concerned about "feature creep"
Quote:
Even though we’ve fully funded the base game, every extra dollar helps to make the experience better. The content we talk about in these stretch goals isn’t “feature creep”; it’s elements we’ve been building and planning that will be all that more impressive with additional resources. In essence, you’re putting things we’ve already discussed for the future into development now. The extra funding means we’re secure in assigning resources to go ahead and begin developing that richer content we had initially planned to fund through the game’s success upon release.

50,000 additional alpha slots were just added. Wonder how quickly they'll go once the dogfighting modules is released. I'm thinking once all those $30 base package backers realize they don't get alpha access there will be a lot who melt those down for the $40 package

I'm just praying they don't release any Cutlass variants or have a limited sale of 350r s.

I'm wondering how many of those alpha slots won't be used, either
A ) Due to not having a good enough computer yet (me)
B ) People buying multiple packages for multiple ships and NPC character slots
etc

I don't agree with Chris Robert's assertion that the constant adding of stretch goals isn't feature creep.
Instead of promising more features that are still vapourware for 2+ years, they should be offering backers more bonus/free content.
Even things like free costumes, bonus credits, character accessories, free paint jobs, etc. will make the fan base happier they backed early rather than a litany of newly promised features that may/may not ever be released (going by track record of many other MMOs) and which will cost players a ton of credits to attain anyway.

The addition of further stretchgoals is to be expected. I'd be more interested in what those stretchgoals are.
Things like FPS and new ships don't worry me too much; CryEngine is designed specifically for FPSes and new ships just require artists to produce them. Entirely new systems like damage control on capital ships sound a lot more complex. Ultimately, only people who have a lot of experience with game development can say for sure how reasonable things are; all we have to gauge how well things are going are releases like the Hangar Module and, more importantly, the dogfighting module. If anything worries me, I would say it's the fact they're so keen on releasing ships for sale before a design has even been completed.
On top of that, more goals = more pledgers, and I think new pledgers are preferable, given the fact that more people will make the game more fun when it comes out. That being said, CIG relies pretty much on the playerbase and games journalism for marketing; they're not really "focusing" on anything.

In other news, Star Citizen's crowdfunding campaign is about to pass $5 million for October. That is huge. Previous best months were September @ $3.3 million and July @ $3.1 million.

Good luck to the O:Pitchfork team in their endeavour to herd cats (and keep people from shooting other players rather than the Vanduul).

So if you look at the standard Kickstarter deadline of 30 days, and the 5 million that Star Citizen raised in the month of October, that alone would put it as the 4th most successful crowd funded project ever. Pretty crazy
