I'm really surprised that some people are so upset about this pick. Outside of the top 5 picks - when is the entry draft NOT a dice roll? I'll never be convinced that unless it's a prodigy like Crosby or you're drafting top 5 five straight years; the draft is the best way to build a dynasty. Crap shoot - you make your best guess and hope it pans out. Might as well bet on the ponies.
Although I was hoping for Girgensons and it stung a little when we traded our pick and then Buffalo drafted him, I will say that I can see the logic of going for a pick like this.
Trajectory is important to consider. A player that is constantly ranking in the middle of the pack for a full year isn't really making a better case than a player that was originally ranked nowhere and then constantly improved. You have to consider where each player will be in a couple of years if they maintain that, and from what they are saying about Jankowski, he is headed in the right direction.

Don't know if it was luck or what but this guy called it:

Don’t be surprised if Craig Button (yes the ex-Flames GM) has an effect on who the Calgary Flames draft. Todd Button, the Flames’ Director of Scouting, is Craig Button’s brother. Back in 2009, Craig Button, controversially, had Tim Erixon ranked really high. Craig actually had Erixon in his top 10. Guess who the Flames drafted that year? Yep, Tim Erixon. In 2011, Crag Button had Bartschi ranked #11 on his list. When it came time for the Flames to make their selection, Bartschi was the highest ranked forward on Button’s list. Coincidence? I think there is something to it.
Looking at the 2012 Craig’s List, Teravainen, Matt Finn, and Mark Jankowski are ranked really high. I wouldn’t be surprised if Teravainen was gone before the Flames are on the clock but Finn and Jankowski? I would be very surprised if Finn and Jankowski were gone before the Flames make their selection. But I wouldn’t be surprised if one of those three became property of the Calgary Flames because of… well… the Button Effect
Weisbrod is talking up the Flames pick, have you seen anything from any draft rankings that suggests he was in the top 55?
So you say that he should be a third round pick, meaning somewhere between 61 and 90, and then question projections in the top 55, which there are many (if not all). Something does not add up here.
Hah so I've got some interesting texts from a couple of my buddies tonight. Supposedly they seem to think I look like Jankowski.
I guess I kinda see it. I don't know. Like the pick either way. Really can't wait for prospects camp and can't wait to see how he does in the USHL next season.

Presumably though, trajectory is already priced into the rankings. A stock that is expected to go higher will trade higher by virtue of that fact alone.
Flames trade down and draft Jankowski and get blasted here by the same people who would have said some other team was genius for picking him in the same spot.

Im excited to watch how this kid develops, be nice if he turned out to be a gem, we all know this franchise needs it.
Very interesting story of being too small to make an OHL team, and then having this massive growth spurt.
I have kind of enjoyed reading this thread and others where people are freaking and raging out as if they scouted all these guys and know what they are freaking out about.
It will be interesting to see how this draft shakes out 3-5 years from now.
Welcome to the Flames Mark Jankowski, I wish you much luck in your progression to the NHL.

As with pretty much every prospect ranked outside of the top 10, I really don't know much about him. I know I didn't like Ceci very much though, so I'm not disappointed the Flames passed on him.
Hopefully Feaster makes the most out of the 2nd round pick he got back.
Comparisons to Chucko are unfair. I reserve judgement as I know little about this kid, but many here were up in arms about the Baertschi pick last year, so go figure. He could just as well be a Blake Wheeler type off-the-board pick as another Chucko.
no offense here, but I don't remember many people being up in arms at the Baertschi selection? the kid was ranked 7th on central scouting and we got him at 14. Not sure why anyone was upset outside of maybe wanting someone else, but hard to argue with that pick vs his ranking.
I don't think anybody had an issue with the idea of trading down and taking Janikowski UNTIL Teravainen was still available. Having the guy ranked 7th overall, who was also young in his draft year and also was a huge riser made Janikowski a tough sell.
However the Flames drafted by the "list" and it sounds like Janikowski was number one on our list and I will trust our scouts who have seen the players in person on that one.

If nothing else, I do like the fact that the scouting staff seems to be heavily prioritizing skill now (although I suppose this started to change later in Sutter's reign).
Completely unrelated, but i found it pretty interesting that Bob McKenzie suggested that this kid's uncle was a candidate for the AGM role that Weisbrod eventually filled.
Lets play devils advocate and call you on your strawman arguement. What makes Gaunce or Teravainen more likely to be impact players? You just continually throw crap out without providing a point of reference to debate. Great junior high school debating style.
