I really hope that if McIvor or Higgins wins it that this election result isn't analysed along racial or gender lines.

But it probably will be, because we're such a "red neck" city.

I don't think that will happen. It pretty much comes down to how Conservative we want our Mayor to be.

Disagree, Nenshi being in the top 3 contradicts that thought. It's not like 'progressive' cities like Toronto, Montreal, and Vancouver have had Mulism mayors or even muslim candidates that have faired well on election day. The fact that Nenshi clearly is given the time of day by the Calgary electorate proves otherwise.

Agreed - facts usually bely Calgary's reputation as some sort of "red neck" society. Calgary, as a city of outsiders, migrants and immigrants and its lack of an establishment is inherently friendly to newcomers and diversity.

Sure some elements of discrimination exist in Calgary as in any other city, but just look at Toronto in comparison. Bastion of multiculturalism and arguably Canada's most progressive city has Rob Ford (think crazier, angrier version of McIver) leading by 20 points in its civic election - this after he basically said that he would like to close the city off to any further immigration.

Calgarians would have no problem electing Nenshi. The few that wouldn't vote for him based on his ethnicity or religion would not be the type that would vote for such a substantive candidate anyway.

I would have responded with "If Dave Kelly, ran for mayor I wouldn't vote for him either," a popular brodcasting personality does not qualify someone to be mayor.

Just like race/sex shouldn't be a factor in voting for a candidate, it also shouldn't be a factor in rejecting them.

Is he not gay? I thought he was . . . Would that be more of an election issue? I would hope not, but it might very well could be.

I was left with the impression he wasn't. He's been MC for my company's Christmas parties over the years and one year I met him in line for the bar. He was with someone he introduced as his girlfriend. So if he's gay, he's not openly gay.

I used to see Dave Kelly all the time when I worked in Inglewood. He always had an uber-hottie chick with him.

Alright then, I'm totally out to lunch. I guess then, would a gay mayoral candidate be at a disadvantage in Calgary? Or anywhere? I haven't seen Milk yet, so I don't have an expert opinion on this matter haha . . .

Yeah I saw him in the +15s a month or two back and he had a super hottie on his arm.

Whichever candidate gets Dave Kelly's digital camera memory cards will get my vote!

Winnipeg elected Glen Murray, openly gay mayoral candidate in 1998. I doubt it would be a factor in Calgary or any larger city in Canada.

I did not know that. That's definitely interesting.

I think it would certainly be a factor. The homophobic segment of the population wouldn't be a majority, but they would be significant. It's wouldn't be impossible to win, but it would be more difficult.

I'd say Calgary is a lot more progressive (As a whole) when compared to Winterpeg, so I can see it at least being possible here.

Not that I know of. Can't a 38 year old man be single and not have kids, run a campaign using purple as his colour (which, by the way, was not his idea), and attend the pride parade without being gay?
