I think when the coach is polarizing, then it rubs off on the players. You might like the coach and feel that the guy who doesn't 'like' the coach isn't putting in the effort, so you get mad at the guy.
This is especially compounded if the coach picks on certain players as Sutter appeared to do. That brings emotion into it and necessarily polarizes the players.

When you have a divisive head coach it's going to filter down. I'm sure there were factions what were for the coach and against him.

You also had a group of players who came up together, earn their RFA deals, grind out negotiations to earn every penny on their deals then all of a sudden see the organization hand out the 3 biggest contracts in franchise history to players who hadn't played a single game here.
It was a disaster of a recipe.

Who are these players that would feel this resentment? Hanifin, Lindholm, and Andersson all signed perfectly reasonable deals coming off their ELCs. Backlund signed 5 years ago.
That really leaves Mangi, OK, and Dubé. Mangi is the only guy who could have any reasonable grievance here.

Brodie
Gaudreau
Tkachuk
Treliving
Lindholm
Hanifin
Backlund
Toffoli
Anyone with a degree of autonomy would rather leave.
Whereas everyone who committed to stay for several years came from outside the organization:
Markstrom
Coleman
Huberdeau
Weegar
Kadri
Tanev
Players with UFA status who opted to re-sign (excluding league min. guys like Michael Stone):
Zadorov - 2021 (2 years)
Backlund - 2018
Versteeg - 2017 (1 yr)
Giordano - 2015
This seems...like a very low number over 8 years. Perhaps it's just coincidence, or maybe it's that they took the fluoride out of the water, but maybe the org is just rotten.

Then you had Kadri who didn't show up, and that could have been the difference making the playoffs. Lindholm, and Huberdeau didn't seem to have a lot of chemistry. Some players supported the coach and some players regardless where they stood gave it 100 percent. The player factions may have play a small part and guys seeing Tkachuk doing well in a better setting.

Biggest question for me is what timeline will the Flames set for themselves? Do they look to make a deal(s) in the days leading up to the draft? Deals at the draft? How much time do they plan to give Lindholm to decide?
Personally, I think you look to pull the trigger on a Hanifin trade before the draft. Get the assets. This should include a 2023 1st. If Lindholm extends, you can consider moving that pick for help now (Travis Koenecny). If Lindholm is undecided or wants out, you keep the pick. If Toffoli wants out, move him at the draft. Take the best package you can get even if that means the primary pick coming back (assuming picks) is in 2024.
I’m not terribly concerned if Lindholm is still unsigned in July. If the Flames eat half of his contract there will be a number of teams backing up the truck. Same goes for Backlund.

It's shortsighted. It seems perfectly reasonable to me that at least Lindholm will want to see the direction of the club after the draft before making an eight-year commitment. This all depends now on what Conroy does with his available assets—Hanifin and Toffoli—and how he pitches that to Lindholm. I don't understand the consternation over this.

NHL players are not dumb. They understand how the business works, and I don't think any of them were altogether very bothered by new UFA deals for players who had earned them.

Rhett has talked about this before. He doesn't believe that's how you build a team, because the players didn't come up together and build a team identity together.
Kent Wilson also has a good way of discussing this through a cohort methodology.
What the Flames did is not how you build a good "team". It's absolutely no surprise that the locker room was dysfunctional - you simply have to look at how it was put together.

Was the team upset when they signed Troy Brouwer or James Neal? They won 50 games with Neal.
I think the players understand when you bring a player like Huberdeau and his history he is going to be paid, how else would we keep him?
Rhett is also a guy who was overpaid and came to camp out of shape all the time.

Seems like an excuse for the players. It didn't seem to hurt Vegas with trading original misfits and bringing in other players and paying them.

The Stanley Cup champions won on the basis of similar mercenary tactics. I personally think Rhett Warrener doesn't understand much of anything useful about today's game and the current NHL.
