I’ve been hanging out in a discussion among Mike Nickel fans and have seen two people make the claim that this election was rigged.
“My candidate lost so it was rigged.”

It’d force a by-election.

You’d have to think Lloydminster is going to vote overwhelmingly for permanent DST, so to be in synch with the Saskatchewan side of town- which alone could put a huge dent in the 10,000 vote gap we have in Calgary. I’m dreading that the yes vote is going to win this.

Any news on what is going on in ward 4? How have they not finished scanning ballots yet?

I’m (happily) trying to wrap my head around how UCP loving’ Calgary elected a Punjabi woman as mayor, and by such a wide margin. How horrible of a candidate did J-Romy have to be to lose this badly? And if the news about Chu emerged a week earlier, he would have been wiped out, advance ballots saved his hide. And of course, he won’t do the moral thing and resign. You have to be a Grade A ####-up to get Michelle Rempel to disavow you.
On the bright side, and with any luck, Brett Wilson’s head literally exploded last night.
Hoping the DST vote stays no, and who cares about the meaningless Senate and equalization results. Overall, a pretty big rebuke for the UCP from Calgary.
Off to find breakfast…does a dark roast pair well with crow?

She's just so horrible.

It didn't go out Friday, she released it after the results and back-dated it to Friday. Slimy.

Isn't this a little overboard? You are calling her horrible based on your own conspiracy theory.

Yep. Vote split because there was no clear #1.
Sucks to go from Druh Farrell to Terry Wong. With the vast majority of the vote going to McRae, Waite, and North Peigan (she got more of the vote than I expected TBH) it's pretty clear Ward 7 would have preferred progressive representation but Wong was able to slide up the middle. Was afraid this would happen.
Hopefully Wong realizes that he needs to listen and represent to the majority of the ward if he wants to be re-elected in 4 years and not the vocal anti-densification anti guidebook anti transit/bike lane etc group he seems to be catering to.

Wasn't vote splitting kind of how Farrell was hanging on in her ward at times?

What do you mean conspiracy theory? She knew about it Friday, and chose to wait until 10:40pm on election night to tweet. She's well known for defending women's rights. If she really didn't want the disgusting sexual predator that she campaigned for to win, she would have been on it hard, all weekend. Instead she implicitly continued to endorse him until after everyone had voted. Given that she campaigned for him, don't you think it's odd she wouldn't attempt in any way to undo the damage she had done?
I'd be ####ng mortified if I had even voted for someone, let alone campaigned for them, the second that news came out.

The DST question had implications that are not immediately apparent for people who only know they need to change the clocks twice a year. This is as much a fault with the question as it is the fault of someone who fails to look into the issue. If anything, it could be an indictment of direct democracy initiatives.

You’re right on the first part. It’s partly hyperbole and partly true what another poster said that everyone is dumb, so don’t take it personally.
For the second part, I mostly agree but it isn’t the questions fault. You can’t put all of the info needed to make an informed decision into the question. That’s up to the voter. And the average voter just isn’t going to do any research. They’re going to vote emotionally and without logic. They think “oh I don’t like losing an hour in the spring so let’s scrap it” without thinking of the implications on day to day life, family, sports, business etc.
That’s the fault of our incompetent provincial government. They get paid to make informed decisions and weigh all the options that your average emotional voter won’t consider. That’s why this is such a bad move to make it a province wide referendum.

Arguably, but her vote % was never as low as Wong's.

Yeah. Very tight race. Wong won with 25% of the vote which is pretty wild.
Wong 6263 25%
Waite 5587 23%
McRae 5259 21%
Peigan 3757 15%
Lalonde 1417 6%
Williams 775 3%
Amoruso 727 3%
Shepherd 578 2%
Bogdanov 284 1%

Calgary is the mythical socially progressive fiscally conservative voter. Notley was punished for the first two years and at the federal level there just aren’t good options.
The reputation of Calgary in the rest of Canada and even in Calgary itself is wrong. People complain that CP leans left and isn’t representative. This election again shows that Calgary the city is progressive at they civic level.

On the other hand voting for not switching is a reasonable position given the health cost of switching. Car accidents increase and heart attacks increase after switches. Switching isn’t zero cost either. Agree with your conclusion though it’s stupid to have a referendum

Can't believe PedoChu won in Ward 4, even without the sexual misconduct have people never watched a council meeting? Yea I get the sexual misconduct news broke pretty late, but if you hired someone to build your garage and you had to constantly explain to him how to do basics like framing, bet you would be looking for a new builder pretty quick. Like the guy is never prepared for his meetings, constantly has to have procedure explained to him, etc. How are ppl okay with this?

It doesn’t seem far fetched to me at all. If you were going to go ahead and prepare an official statement, why wouldn’t you disseminate that to your 130k followers? And instead do so after polls closed?
Seems to me she still wanted Chu elected, but she didn’t want to be formally or publicly endorsing him. I could be wrong.
