People want to create a "super line". I always think that there's only so much puck to go around.

A lot of people forget that there's another end to the ice as well.

Toronto is not over a barrel. In fact, the Leafs hold the hammer. They can let Nylander rot all year if they like. They still control his NHL destiny.
That’s underselling the offer quite a bit. Janko is a big, young skilled centre with 2nd/3rd line potential which is a very valuable commodity. And Andersson is a potential top 4 puck moving RHD, another valuable commodity. I think Jankowski + Andersson is quite an attractive package overall. Not sure if it fits exactly what TOR wants but I think you underrate how valuable that package is.

To add to that point the Leafs are not dealing from a position of strength either. Their hands are pretty much tied if they want players under reasonable contracts to play for them this season.

What people keep forgetting is that Toronto isn't trading Nylander. Just his bargaining rights, and if he gets moved, the acquiring team has lost a bunch of bargaining power (since they gave up players to get those rights, they need him in the lineup and thus are highly motivated to sign him, maybe to the point where they cave in to his demands).

This is a good point. In this context Nylander's trade value probably drops every day, since most teams will have to race against time to get a good deal signed. It is hard to see a trade happening.

No team is trading for him without a contract already worked out.

Then the acquisition price depends on the contract. The more you pay, the less you offer.

And Nylander will be playing several teams against each other, almost like a UFA. So now you have to outbargain a couple other teams to get something Nylander will agree to, and then decide what to offer Toronto. And the problem there is that Toronto can't afford to take on much contract in return because the whole reason they are having a hard time is because they need to save cap space for Matthews and Marner.

So you have to end up (a) making a deal you can live with with Nylander and then (b) hope Toronto accepts what you will trade. It's a messy 3 way negotiation with the added hassle of other teams doing the same thing.

I think Nylander's big issue is taking a discount compared to his teammates, seeing them all sign for more next summer. Then getting traded to somewhere he doesn't want to play.. while on a discounted contract. I think that is a fair concern for him.

Not valuable enough. Would you have traded a 22 year old Gaudreau for Frederik Gauthier and Timothy Liljegren?

I'm not saying he doesn't have a case, though I think he's not worth what he's supposedly asking. I'm saying it's a tough deal to figure out for the acquiring team.

Pierre LeBrun @PierreVLeBrun
The Maple Leafs' priority/hope is still to re-sign William Nylander but my understanding with that with just two days to go to the signing deadline, Toronto has circled back to some teams suggesting they put their best foot forward on trade offers... which makes sense

Can Nylander still be offer sheeted?

If anyone is going to trade for him they could certainly afford to offer sheet him. Up to 8.1 million is only a 1st/2nd/3rd.

You'd obviously just do it short term then renogotiate a long term deal later I would think.

If you can pull off the trade why do an offer sheet?

you may not have the pieces to pull off a trade compared to other teams

take the flames for example, do you want to trade what they want (bidding war) or 8.1 mill plus a 1st/2nd/3rd?

Yeah. But he suggested a team that could trade for him should do an offer sheet. Unless I misunderstood.

To answer your second part you move the bodies, to make room for the salary coming in and you keep the picks because with large salaries on the books you need that (potentially) high end talent on ELCs for 2-3 years

IMO of course

A short term offer sheet and the Leafs likely match and then trade Nylander next season.

Also on Tim and Sid, Friedman believes that regardless of the outcome this Saturday, this will be the last season Nylander will be in the Leafs organization.

The leafs handling of this situation has been kind of dumb in my opinion.

The gm coming out and pledging that they 'can & will' get all their guys signed, yet I am not sure why nylander and his price tag are even required on that roster given they have a formidable forward group.

With Marner creeping towards $9-10M territory and Matthews likely in the $10-12M range, and already having tavares (not to mention Marleau for next year) this was a great year to go all in, seeing as changes are inevitable.

Kapanen and gardiner are also up for new contracts this offseason.

Good on Nylander for holding out, there’s a cap for a reason. Toronto wanted to risk losing him by signing Tavares and now they are going to. Leafs can’t have everything their way

@DarrenWHaynes: Nylander traded to the Flames.

That was the headline on March 10, 1994, when in a blockbuster deal, Calgary GM Doug Risebrough acquired Mich...

I saw only the first half of that tweet and almost went crazy.
