I have to agree with Alpine Oracle. I was disappointed with Rasmus today. Of course I was expecting a lot...but he seemed to fight the puck (one shift he was horrid) and a little uninterested. I saw him last dev camp and in Penticton last fall and was always super impressed. Not today...although I'll admit it was tougher to 'scout' the white team at time I the first half because they were the far end .

Anyhow - you're not crazy AO. I saw what you saw.. but i'm still a big fan of his and am happy the conditioning is way better!

Quick question based on hockey camps. Do the Flames or any Flames players put on any hockey camps in Calgary for Novice players? Or is there a thread on this somewhere?

Look at what Brandon Montour did to the AHL for three years before finally getting his cup of coffee at age 23

There should be no rush with these guys (rasmus, oliver, fox, juuso)... They're still babies and have a lot to learn before they're NHL ready

If you were to combine the two, you'd have a top 10 D-man in the NHL like Karlsson. Separately, they look like they could be solid middle pairing guys if they hit their upper end potential.
Any chance either become a regular this season ?

If you combined them you'd get Karlsson, who is flashy and makes no mistakes. And you'd also get Chris Butler, who's not flashy and makes tonnes of mistakes.

The way I am viewing the season as of right now is that the 1-5 and #7 are called for.

The obvious 5 and Bartkowski as the fill in guy. Bart is cheap #1, and it doesn't matter much. If an injury happens to one of the 1-5 guys, you're not going to plug Bart in there for 4+ games.

So that basically leaves 1 spot open for 4 guys. Kulak is the odds on favourite just due to experience. He looks like he'll be ready based off last season and it would make sense to try him out.

In order for Andersson or Kylington to earn the spot out of camp, they'll have to beat him clean. Wotherspoon is also there in case all three of them suck, which is doubtful.

If I was betting, I'd say Kulak right now. When we get to camp and can see what they're all doing, it'll be easier. Waiver status also plays a factor.

I still think Wotherspoon is a pretty solid prospect, and I am glad the Flames decided to give him a qualifying offer.

However, he never seems to have strong training camps prior to the beginning of seasons. I'm not counting on him stealing Kulak's spot in that bottom pairing role.

I do think Wotherspoon can get some NHL time if Hamonic is injured. Wotherspoon could potentially play a similar role, but in a 5/6 capacity. But if I'm not mistaken, he is waiver eligible (or soon to be). So I would also not be surprised if the Flames lost him to a claim.

Bless his heart, but every team has a Tyler Wotherspoon. He won't be lost on waivers.

Any particular reason why Klimchuk isn't at this camp?

It's uncommon for guys to be at these things three or four years after their draft. The team can only expect you to attend three of them, which is right after your draft, and then two years after.

AOM, Poirier, Smith, Pollock, and McDonald were the only guys who could have skipped out, but didn't. You can probably figure out the reasons why.

Most of the older pro prospects - Klimchuk, Shinkaruk, Kulak, Wotherspoon, Gillies, Rittich, Jankowski, Caroll, Pribyl, Hathaway, wouldn't be expected to come, although I expect all of them at Pentincton if eligible.

Klimchuk's season also ended with a concussion, and we don't know if he's even 100% yet.

Well I meant as in next year or even the year after. That is why I said when. I have no problem at all with letting Rasmus cook down in the A.

I could see the Canucks take him. They aren't exactly strong on the backend. Spoon is a Vancouver native and played for Travis Green in Portland.

Spoon sounds like he had a good season in the AHL last year and it also sounds like one of the main reasons he wasn't called up was due to maintaining the asset (limiting his games so he wouldn't need waivers last year or something like that).

If Spoon plays well in camp, I could see the team try to keep him as the 7th and send Bartkowski down. I think that is the ideal situation for the Flames but it is up to Spoon.

My first look at the camp this year as well.

If you didn't know the names you'd come away thinking it was what it was ... a group with better defensemen then forwards because not a whole lot was generated five on five up front.

Kylington really stood out to me, thought he was the best player on the ice, though two heinous giveaways were hard to miss. The way he took control of that powerplay was pretty amazing. His hands in tight and vision are NHL ready. His risk/easy play filter is street hockey level.

Thought Dube up front was a hugely noticeable. On the puck, and constantly putting himself in lanes to get it back. A pain in the ass to play against. He literally killed the first minute of that 7 minute short handed situation his own.

Valimaki looks great. If you didn't know he was 18 you'd assume he was a seasoned AHL guy ready to break in as a quiet mistake free simple play defender. That's a good sign as the offence and puck moving will come, at this level he's already able to play shut down.

Parsons is so quick. I can see what they mean though about over committing at times, but he can work on that. Amazing to see a cross ice pass and then look up and see Parsons already across waiting for it. Slick.

Those were my highlights.

Andersson looked good, but didn't have a lot to work with when he was on the ice. You could see him waiting out a defender but then not seeing anyone skate into the seam to take a pass etc.

Fox unflashy but solid.

I caught a bit of Steinberg yesterday and he said the two guys he has been most impressed with during this week were Parsons (no brainer from most reports) and his other was Mangiapane....who really hasnt had a lot of praise nor scorn from all other reports i have heard/read.

Found that interesting.

I just seemed to get the impression on here from the people that follow outside the NHL that we won the lotto with Andersson. I can't see anything special myself.
And that's based on what? This development camp alone? Did you see any of his play in Stockton this year?

Can't say the same about Rasmus.
Meh. It's a scrimmage in the middle of summer. No one is going to make or not make the team based on this development camp. Tough to read too much into it, it isn't a real training camp. The guys who need to impress there are the tryouts.

Let's see how he looks in training camp. Obviously the Flames feel he's close to the NHL or they wouldn't have brought him up last season for a taste.
