They got $2 billion over 10 years (or $200 million per year). Nothing compared to other leagues, but not exactly a pittance.

When you compare the US TV contract to the Canadian contract, some might call it a pittance:

US - 23 teams
$2B over 10 years = $200M per year
$8.7M per team per year

Canada - 7 teams
$5.2B over 12 years = $433M per year
$61.9M per team per year

The US contract is worth approximately 14% of the value of the Canadian contract.

It's too bad Canadian teams need to share their contract with the Americans. This comes to a total of $633M for national TV contracts divided by 30 equals $21.1M per team.

The funny thing is, they didn't used to. Then at one point (in the 80s I think) Canadian teams gave it up so they could be a part of the big U.S. Network cash in that was just around the corner. The one that never happened.

Canadian teams would truly be in a class of their own versus all the others if they were able to keep all their TV revenue. It's too bad.

Why do you think it never happened? if you were king for a day what changes would you make? Or is the US tv dream impossible for hockey.

I think the product is really watered down. I can watch the Flames because I have a vested interest but today I tried to watch NY-Bos and just couldn't do it. It was so poor.
