Part of the rule is the player has to have the bleeding stopped, as well as a clean jersey. He had a clean jersey but was bleeding all over the place, thus would be an ineligible player.

This is the only thing I could quickly find. It's from '99 just looking back on the incident. Would be hard to find something from when it actually happened, esepcially video since it was the previous year.

Last December at home against Dallas, Theo's Flames were behind by one on a power play because Theo was hooked in the mouth. His gushing blood quickly obliterated the red Calgary C. Theo was ordered to replace his jersey.

The trainer ran for another. During the timeout little Theo stood at the bench, dwarfed by his taller teammates, shirtless, bleeding by the mouthful, angrily yapping at Dallas players and smiling wanly at the silent, stunned crowd. Suddenly a Calgary fan stood up behind the bench. He stripped off his own Calgary jersey and tossed it over the glass.

In an age when so many professional athletes seem like dour businessmen with sticks, I suspect only one millionaire player who looks and acts like a kid would prompt a fan literally to give him the shirt off his back.

And I suspect too that only one player would have the showbiz savvy to don that jersey with joy, smile that bloody, gap-toothed smile and hold his arms out for approval by the immediately appreciative crowd.

IIRC the fan jersey was super small and Theo couldn't wear it, the trainers went at got him a massive one that was humber 76 I think until they got him a normal one.

Here's the rule:

Rule 8 – Injured Players – 8.3 - Blood – A player who is bleeding or who has visible blood on his equipment or body shall be Ruled off the ice at the next stoppage of play until the bleeding has been stopped and the cut or abrasion covered (if necessary). It is required that any affected equipment and/or uniform be properly decontaminated or exchanged.

Monahan had blood on his jersey, he went to the bench and exchanged the jersey.

After the exchange he got blood on the new jersey. At the next stoppage he went to the bench and exchanged that jersey.

Nothing wrong there.

The question is, if the cut or abrasion is covered, is that sufficient to be stopped? Monahan had the cut covered. It was insufficient to stop the blood, but that wouldn't have been known until after he went on the ice.

So what could the Flames/Monahan have done differently?

They could have waited and triple checked the cut. But is that reasonable in professional sports? Or would a patch job be sufficient? I think a patch job would be sufficient. If for whatever reason it's not, then change the jersey and try again. Which is exactly what they did.

Remember folks, PJ Stock is literally wearing Ducks colours tonight.
