So, in other words, they offered Shinkaruk

(presumably along with Higgins and a first rounder).

I dunno man, McEichel/Reinhart/Girgensons at C, Kane/Ennis/Grigorenko on the wing, and Bogosian/Ristolainen/Zadorov on D... that's a really strong set of young talent.

Their rebuild is going to fail because they have too many centres. Not enough soft, undersized wingers.

They have certainly built up some prospects, but in terms of NHL players, only three picks have played since they arrived:
Scheifele (2011 1-7) 130gp 22-43-65
Lowry (2011 3-67) 54gp 6-9-15
Trouba (2012 1-9) 105gp 16-29-45

Calgary, by comparison:
Baertschi (2011 1-13) 66gp 8-20-28
Granlund (2011 2-45) 40gp 7-9-16
Wotherspoon (2011 2-57) 14gp 0-4-4
Gaudreau (2011 4-104) 54gp 16-25-41
Monahan (2013 1-6) 129gp 39-29-68

Which begs the question: what the hell did they offer?

It's not a matter of if they win a Cup, but how many. It's simple math.

Murray confirms he couldn't sign Lemieux for now but hadn't given up on it. Not a reason for trade.
LOL don't teams have these kind of discussions with the player when they interview them at the draft? I could understand over time that things can change, but this was 8 months ago.

It sounds like the relationship soured after he didn't make the team out of camp.

Claude reacted to the selection with optimism, saying he was happy his son was going somewhere he hadn't played during his 1,215-game career. The four-time Stanley Cup champion even believed Brendan would make the team this season, perhaps hinting at what he thought of the quality of the roster.

"It wouldn't surprise me. He's the kind of kid you know he'll catch on the pace," Claude said at the draft. "He's young, but they've got a lot of open spots."

Brendan failed to crack Buffalo's roster out of training camp and returned to the OHL, where he's performed well with 35 goals (and a team-leading 120 penalty minutes) for the Barrie Colts. It appears his relationship with the Sabres soured somewhere along the way, perhaps due to the team's dismal performance this season.

You're the best SL!

Pretty funny hearing an 18 yo 31st overall crack the ####s about not making the team straight out of camp. Glad we don't have those characters around the Flames.

Apple doesn't fall too far from the tree. Claude Lemieux is a tool. Nice to see his entitled son following in his footsteps...

If he's anything like his dad, I hope he never sees a second of NHL action. The game needs less guys like that, not more.

When the Flames picked at 34 last year they said that they had one guy on their list ahead of Mason McDonald after day 1 that went before they selected. Lemieux and Barbashev were the only ones that made any sense of the three and seeing who they selected later in the 2nd Round, I'd lean towards them wanting Lemieux.

If so, I am glad they didn't have the opportunity to take him.

Hmm, they really do their homework on character and personality. I'd bet it was Barbashev in that case, without knowing who was that 3rd guy

Glad Kane didn't come to Calgary, but also glad he didn't go to Vancouver. I would hate it if it actually worked out and they got a free-one.

Winnipeg wins this year, where they get something from nothing, given surgery.
As far as going forward, it will be fun to evaluate over time.

Curse you! I was about to ask the exact same thing!

Probably Bieksa, Cole Cassels and Will Acton.
