Umm what efforts are we splitting in half? Is there an army of people right now at the saddledome?

You do realize how long the cleanup will take all over the city right? it's not just a matter of snapping your fingers and having a house re-built or flood restoration work done? The insurance claims alone will take weeks to do. It seems like you are insinuating that Ken King should forget about the saddledome, grab a wet vac and go out to *insert random private dwelling* and start vacuuming.

If people are willing to volunteer their efforts then they choose what it's going to be on. Seems like a funny thing to complain about. When are you heading down to help out?

The fact that there are people trying to organize a dome cleanup speaks to the priorities not being straight.

I'll be volunteering to help the Calgarians that actually need help not so we can have the Stampede and the saddledome cleaned in time.
Good for you for volunteering. However, it doesn't make you any less of a pompous ass.

The fact that people are offering to help clean the dome speaks to the fact that the Flames and the Stampede are integral parts of our community. There is going to be an army of volunteers helping with cleanup efforts, and yes, the Dome and Stampede grounds are part of the city and deserve such assistance just as much as any other area of the city. It's called civic pride, and it is not a misplaced priority.

The loss of historic memorabilia is sad. And it is just as sad if it is 30 years of hockey history or 30 years of grandma's family photos. It is all history that is lost.

Meanwhile your surfing the Flames forums while crews are out cleaning up, do you get the irony of your statements?

I've donated to the Alberta Flood Fund, which goes to the victims that need immediate help, thanks.

All that I can gather from here is that I'm a screaming "moron" because I think the Saddledome or the Stampede grounds is relatively unimportant compared to what else is going on, so I'm done

It would sadden me if this thread ran off the rails like so many others into shouting matches.

I'm just an outsider looking in, but I care about you people and your community. It would be nice if heated discussion could just go away for this one thread.

ok - enough of THAT... off to watch hockey and forget about the horrors of the world for a little bit.

Chin up Calgary!

The Stampede is so huge for Calgary economically, I don't see how you can say that getting the grounds fixed is not important.

This is exactly right. And to clean up for Stampede is not just the stampede grounds it is the all areas of the city. This shouldn't be the priority, but it should be used as the symbol for the city saying, yeah we could get everything cleaned up in two weeks.

I would said a lot of volunteers help for one or two days and are good with what they did (And good on them, any help is great). This might be a way to keep people volunteering for a week or more. This could get more corporate money donated, this could get more contractor in the city that would stay for more work.

But also people say that the dome as important as peoples homes, that is correct. But it is not unimportant, The Saddledome is the home of many childhood memories. Attending Olympic hockey games in 1988, all the flames games I went too. I worked there for six seasons. It is an important landmark for me and many in the city.

Pincher Creek had quite a few floods while I lived there. '96, '99, '05....maybe one more year. In '05 I was in high school and the fire department asked for help to sand bag. Guys with trucks helped deliver the sandbags, and at one point we had to get police escort because certain people in a trailer park that was beyond hopeless to save were pretty pissed off that emergency crews just told them to evacuate without really trying to save anything. Their situation really was hopeless. Right beside a fast rising river at pretty much the lowest part in town. What are you going to do? Someone had to make the call that sandbagging efforts had to go elsewhere.

The point is that in an emergency everyone has their own sense of what is important to save, and what isn't. For someone who is in the process of watching their house float away, the fact that the Saddledome is getting so much media attention can be a real gear grinder. But there is nothing you can do.

I don't live in Alberta anymore, so I can volunteer my help, but judging from the pictures and comments on Twitter and even here on CP, people are doing their absolute best to help those that need help.

The picture of the cars lined up going through a community from house to house doing what needs to be done is pretty special by itself. I'm honestly not surprised. Albertans are a special breed.

It's way easier installing that stuff during the original construction than it is to retro-fit new equipment.

The job won't even be estimated until weeks from now..then there will be the tenders, etc.

The Flames will not be using that building in this calendar year at least.
That's normal times.....this stuff ain't going out to tender.

Cost plus and get 're dun.

Agreed entirely, if they want it done as fast as possible to be ready, cost plus and design build for any changes.

I think Scotiabank should step up and take on a mortgage of their own to make repairs/rebuild happen. Then we will have a big celebration when they pay it off and CP will hire them a band to walk out in the CEO's bedroom when he's asleep with symbols crashing in his ears to thank him for his contribution and to punish him for the awful commercials they make.

I disagree..you both sound like you have a magic wand that throws money to fix things. Throw as much money as you want at it, you won't speed it up much. I'm a commercial construction electrician, and I also have spent a great deal of time in the event level of the dome. If you knew anything about the installation of electrical equipment, and of the Canadian electrical code, you would understand what I've been trying to say.

Back to the magic wand...wasn't a new arena in the works anyway? After the damage is assessed, do you think that a multi-million dollar band-aid will be applied, only to be replaced by a new building soon? If they decide to fix the damage, it will be a major renovation and the team will stay in the facility long-term.
