Screw the saddledome and the stampede. The media and too many people are focusing on that instead of the tens of thousands of people directly effected by the flood.

It doesn't have to be more or less important. It is part of the loss. We don't have to weigh what losses are more or less important. They are all cumulatively awful, with various people having varying degrees of pain inflicted upon them.

I could also argue that since there weren't a large number of casualties that this flood is not a travesty.
Look at what happened in India yesterday. 600 dead while we just lost our homes. http://www.cbc.ca/news/world/story/2...oll-rises.html
You can't compare different losses and say it is meaningless.

I'm not sure the media attention is lacking on those that lost their homes. But you are correct, the Stampede, the Flames, and business down town being shut down re getting some attention. The reason being, the 90% of Calgarians who have been lucky enough (and I mean that, so fortunate) not to lose their homes or have significant damage, things like the Stampede are how they are being effected. Life in Calgary is not normal for anyone right now. Agreed, the real victims are those with damage to their homes, but people are allowed to focus on the entire picture as well, and the media is allowed to bring that story to them. Also, don't underestimate the impact events like the Stampede can be as a rallying point and up lifting thing for the city, including those most impacted. Pulling together and making something this city is known for happen might be a great distraction for those folks, and don't doubt for a second that both the Stampede and the Flames won't play a huge role in raising funds for those most hurt by this.

Of course we can.
Middle class uninsured calgarians > insured multi-millionaires.
The fact that there are people trying to organize a dome cleanup speaks to the priorities not being straight.
I'll be volunteering to help the Calgarians that actually need help not so we can have the Stampede and the saddledome cleaned in time.

Your preachiness is very annoying. Calgarians as a whole are a classy bunch and don't need you to set their priorities for them. People will put their time in where they see fit, for their own reasons, and they don't need you telling them how they should be thinking.
Really glad you've decided how you are going to help the city out, I honestly think its great, but knock it off when it comes to telling others their priorities are misaligned.

Why split the effort in half?
Get these people affected new houses/repairs, then worry about the Stampede/Dome. There is time to get the Dome fixed for September, but getting the Stampede grounds fixed up in... 13 days is a hell of a lot of work

Well it's nice that people are more worried about sports than human beings who lost their homes

If that's what you get out of this, then so be it no point continuing a complex conversation with you as that clearly indicates you are incapable of seeing more than 2 outcomes to situations.

I'm not against fixing the Dome and the Grounds, but it should be priority number 2 at the moment. It makes more sense to me to put full effort into something more important, not divert part of it to something else

Dressing rooms, office space and food services can all be handled in temporary fashions. Even if the players change in glorified ATCO trailers for a bit.
With enough money and workers, being open for the first game of the season is realistic. Hosting concerts in two weeks, not so much. It'll probably take a week to mostly dry out, and then demo work has to start immediately. If the jumbotron controls are ground level, I would imagine the speaker system's controls are too.

you are forgetting about the service entry transformer, the main switchgear, the central distribution panel, and the numerous electrical rooms on the ground floor, and the conduits and cables inside them. None of it waterproof, all of it submerged, and all of it will need replaced, not 'dried out', in order to pass inspection. It will be a monumental task. It's way easier installing that stuff during the original construction than it is to retro-fit new equipment.
The job won't even be estimated until weeks from now..then there will be the tenders, etc.
The Flames will not be using that building in this calendar year at least.

So we'll get a million volunteers down to Mission next week for cleanup. Sounds effective.

Had an idea!
|
It isn't possible to get every single person doing important cleanup work. Focus on the more important stuff, but realize that there will still be people left that can help at other less important areas as well.
Flood cleanup tends to be a bit annoying because of the morons who scream and yell when everyone isn't focusing on what THEY think is important.
Everyone needs help, but not everyone can help at the same place. So if some people help at the Saddledome, at least they're helping out somewhere. The rest will take care of itself.

I'm going to weigh in here, though my opinion probably isn't needed or wanted but here it is anyways.
Property loss is loss regardless of the status of your bank account. The loss and damage to the Saddledome effects the middle to upper class in some capacity. The loss and damage to personal property like houses effects those millionaires in charge of the Saddledome and Stampede too. It isn't just a one way street. Priority shouldn't be set one way or another. Everyone is in need of help. Who is to say both cant be helped?
