I actually think you could make a much better show out of this than the "Bill Daly opens a bunch of envelopes" method they currently use.
Start with a quick explanation similar to what Bettman did: "there are 1001 possible combinations of 4 balls that can be drawn with each team randomly assigned the number of combinations shown on this giant screen".
Draw the first ball, then update the number of combinations that are still possible for each team on the giant board. i.e. if ball 14 is drawn, the computer removes all combinations without the 14 and updates the display with the new percentages. Repeat for the second and third balls, updating the screen after each one.
When only one ball is left to draw there will be 11 possibilities. At this point you change the screen to show who wins for each of the 11 remaining balls and have the dramatic conclusions of drawing the last ball and getting the winner. So, if balls 3,4 and 5 were the first three shown you'd have part of your screen showing something like:
1: Florida
2: Colorado
6: Tampa Bay
7: Calgary
8: Florida
etc.
and a close-up of the machine spitting out that last ball on the other side. You'd know exactly what outcome you are cheering for and be able to tell in an instant who the winner is.
It really wouldn't be hard to follow, there is no need for the fans to worry about the giant list of combinations assigned to each team as the computer would be keeping the available possibilities updated. The outcome would not be known until the final ball is drawn (unlike the current envelope system) unless by some fluke one team owns all 11 combinations that include the first three numbers. This would also remove most of the conspiracy theories as you are seeing the actual draw, live.
In a way this would be similar to the World Cup or Champions League draws where they first draw the name of a team, then the screens update to show which pools they can go into, then they draw the pool.
Thoughts?
