None taken. Just throwing a friendly observation out there. What you choose to do with it is completely up to you.

One way of winning an argument is to act like a jerk so everyone puts you on their ignore list.
Well played.

Do we really need to constantly remind people to treat each other with respect? We are all (well almost all) adults here.
Passions flare in heated arguments, so we accept a certain amount of it will always be a part of internet discussions. But generally the tone of this site sometimes is far more dickish than it needs to be.

When you constantly have several people jump down your throat about things you didn't say and get treated with very little respect on a site in general, it gets old. I guess the simplest solution is just not to post here.

That is what Washington thought when they traded Forsberg for Erat.

OT, but it's too bad that this is how Erat is going to be remembered. There was a time when he was one of the most underrated players in the league. When Washington acquired him, he was declining and it put a huge spotlight on that.

You don't want to trade a young player before he has shown his full potential.
But young players can also become depreciating assets. Ryan Strome (5th OA) would almost certainly have gotten a better return for the Islanders two years ago (when he was 21) than they would get now.
I really don't know which way Bennett is going to go. But if the Flames have doubts about his development, they may feel he's worth including in a deal for a key piece.

I suppose that's one way to go.
Or you could rise above it and uplevel the conversation.
Ultimately though your choice.

Honestly, I like Bennetts game the way it is today. As he thickens out with age he will just get increasingly more annoying to play against. Obviously, I believe he improves with time. But he doesn't avoid the dirty areas and he has skill. If he is this player for the rest of his career I'll be happy. Not ideal for a 4th overall, but still an effective NHLer. And he isn't going to get paid based on potential growth so he will just be a long term, middle role player with a decent contract. I also don't think that potential growth adds much value to a trade for him as he stands today.
So why not just stick it out, with this kid who doesn't back down, is an effective NHL player at age 20, and legitimately wanted to be drafted here and play here?
If your argument is you don't think he's an NHLer for some reason, then he has pretty minimal trade value. I would listen to an argument to trading almost every other asset the Flames have before Bennett. It just doesn't make sense to me.

Can't think of a worse/better NHL trade in the last decade.

Being big spenders on deadline day rarely works out and I hope the Flames never do it again. Stay away from rentals.

Yup. Between Hanzal and Shattenkirk those were two big swings and misses. Even Boyle. Unless your filling a big hole for a good price it pretty much never works out. Eaves probably worked the best but is now worth a first rounder and can't even play.

It would be an interesting study to track the success of rentals. Anecdotally it seems it 'never' works, but smarter hockey minds than us continue to do it.

There's definitely instances and small percentage of trades a year than can pay dividends but more often than not when high price is paid your not going to come out ahead. I would agree with you though that the good managers can pick their spots and it would be interesting to see some sort of analysis on it.

Help, save, whatever.

I think when teams go for a star-rental or the highly sought after deadline player they always seem to screw up the chemistry.
Tinkering with the bottom 6 and bottom pairing defensemen are the ways to go. These are the guys that really make a big difference in the playoffs.

Gaborik was pretty great for the Kings in 2014.

I don't think we make the playoffs without trading for stone so it's a toss up of a (short) playoff run or a second rounder.
I thought the price they paid for hanzal was high at the time.
