It's not really anything. If you read, the top 3 in votes would "win" and get to be on the ballot, and there were only three candidates, so they all "won". He placed third.

The person behind the Supreme Court leak is now being called Deep Throat 2.0 for the way in which the draft was released. Hopefully it doesn't take 30 years like it did last time to reveal who Deep Troat 1.0 was.

I agree but if they can do this quickly, they can do other things quickly too.
Look, at this point, It's not about turning the SCOTUS, its about making anything but full support an untenable position for any centrist/obstructionist Democrat or "reasonable" Republican to take. Write the narrative for once and endlessly attack every Senator in every blue or purple state for the next half a year.
If you think the mid-terms are lost, and everyone should at this point, why not take a risk and turn them into a referendum on an issue that polls at like 70%? An aggressive loss that looks like you give the slightest #### is preferable to being the party that focuses on making sure SCOTUS judges have nice, quiet streets.

Mid-terms by their nature are difficult for the incumbents, but perhaps this is the rallying point to ensure more moderates are elected. If the SC opens the door for state legislatures to do pretty much what they want, then the voters need to make sure they elect legislators who actually align with their views.
It is a false dichotomy to suggest that you can either take an aggressive view that 70% agree with or make sure the judges are safe. They can have both.

The solution is very simple - the Democrats need to start doing a lot of the things that the Republicans are accusing them of doing. The rules can’t only apply to one side.
They won’t, because most of the Democrats are a centrist controlled opposition who talk a big game, but never actually do anything to help the average person or counter the GOP’s evil policies, but that’s what should happen.

^I think the political landscape in the US is at the point where the Democratic establishment is the party of the status quo. I think this is largely because they "won" the culture wars and then had to play defense for the next couple decades. Oddly, the GOP is now the party of change but certainly not the party of progress.

Because deep down, centrists Democrats like Republican policies. Sure they have big gesture actions like appointing a black LGBT press secretary and the first this and the first that. But deep down, the rich and elite stick together.

There’s no correlation between being a moderate Democrat and being affluent. The U.S. is just a conservative country in general. Only about a third of Democrats want a greatly expanded government.
Quote:
There are much bigger divides between parties than within them on opinions about the size of government. Democratic-aligned groups overwhelmingly prefer a bigger government providing more services; GOP groups, by similar margins, favor smaller government. But when asked if government services should be greatly expanded from current levels, Democrats are divided: A clear majority of Progressive Left (63%) favor greatly expanding government services, compared with about a third in other Democratic-oriented groups.

This is a good breakdown of the Democratic coalition.

Tldr: The group pushing hardest for systemic change is more educated, young, and white than Democrats as a whole. Older, less educated and affluent, and non-White Democrats are more moderate.

Vast majority of presidents get smashed in the mid-terms after they first win presenidency.
Trump lost 40 house seats. Obama 63, Clinton 54, Bush 1 8, Reagan 26, Carter 15, Ford 48, Nixon 12, Johnson 48.
Only exception was George W Bush in year post 9/11.
Perhaps its a big land shift in politics, but more likely its just the same as always. The party that loses the presidency gets fired up and does well in the mid-terms.

Establishment Dems are the same group they were in 1995. It's pretty amazing, actually. The Clintons, Pelosi, Biden - they're all part of that Tony Blair school of the 90s.
The corporate backers of the Democrats are only slightly different than the corporate backers of the GOP.

Democratic Mainstays are the largest group in the coalition. They’re also the ones who backed Biden strongest.
Quote:
Democratic Mainstays – the largest single group in the Democratic coalition this year (constituting 28% of Democrats and Democratic leaners) – are considerably more likely than other groups to call themselves politically moderate. Still, they hold nearly as liberal positions as other Democratic-oriented groups on economic issues, while they diverge from others in the coalition somewhat on immigration issues. (For instance, they are much less likely to support increasing legal immigration and more likely to identify illegal immigration as a problem in the country.) They also are more invested in U.S. military power than other Democratic-oriented groups. Black Democrats are particularly concentrated in this group: 40% of Black Democrats are Democratic Mainstays. Mainstays are also older and less likely to be college educated than other segments of the coalition.
|
The progressive wing of the party seems to have trouble getting their heads around this large constituency, who differ sharply from them in a number of ways.
Identify as liberal:
Progressive 79 per cent
Mainstays 30
Success in life is pretty much determined by forces outside our control:
Progressive 62
Mainstays 31
The fact there are some people in this country who have personal fortunes of a billion dollars or more is a bad things for the country:
Progressive 73
Mainstays 29
The number of legal immigrants the U.S. admits should increase:
Progressive 63
Mainstays 28
It is essential/important for a person to believe in God in order to be considered good and moral:
Progressive 15
Mainstays 56
Some facts to keep in mind the next Democratic presidential nomination race. The headwinds progressives struggle against aren’t some corporate conspiracy - there are simply far fewer Democrats who share their values than they assume.
