Such a poor take.
The majority of 2nd round picks don't pan out.
This upcoming draft is regarded as a ver poor one.
It's much more likely this 2nd round pick never materializes than it becomes one of the greatest 2nd round picks ever.

Curtis Lazar has same stats as Michael Ferland if you take away the last 10 games Ferland has played. Numbers in junior were comparable but one guy was drafted in the first round while the other in the 5th round.

I could see Lazar as the replacement for Stajan. I think you can be happy if you can get a guy like that with a 2nd round pick in a weak draft.

People are reacting to the PK Subban and Bergeron comment. It's fine to argue the value of a 2nd... I personally believe a 2nd, especially in this draft and at this point in our team's trajectory, is of little value. Statistically speaking, it is very unlikely for a 2nd round pick to be as good as Curtis Lazar is.

It's almost like adding another Versteeg to the lineup. Both Lazar and Kostka are about the same size and doesn't add much size necessary for the playoff run. I was hoping for big-ness on the right side. See how this pans out.

Which was my reaction to someone writing off a 2nd as a guaranteed Wahl or Ramholt.
2nd rounders develop into solid players all of the time. Probably more often than reclamation projects turning out actually.
Funny how now that the Flames traded their 2nd, it has little value but when the speculation was happening before the deadline no one wanted to part with it for anything.

I was thinking of a shorter, harder-working, better two-way Joe Colborne.

Sven to Vancouver would be a fail considering Sven is a top 6 or bust type of player and couldn't crack the Flames top 6. Lazar can play bottom 6 and he's won a Memorial Cup and WJHC as a captain. I expect the Flames really like his leadership qualities and that's something Baertschi never had a lick of.

Smith-Brassard-Pyatt
Wingels-Kelly-Lazar
Bailey-Mccormick-Neil
Per Ottawa's community on hf, that has been their lineup for the past little while. I can't possibly see him being good enough to push any of our C's to the wing if he couldn't do it on Ottawa.
Secondly, Bennett putting up points is only part of his development as a player. I would rather him put up slightly less points and take huge steps toward being a complete C over him putting up points and not learning anything else. Again, Treliving has made it abundantly clear that we are still in a rebuild. Developing Bennett now as a complete center is an extremely important step in helping him be successful for the next 5-10 years.
Yes, growing pains suck and we all want him to put up insane numbers right now, but it'll take time and moving him to the wing when times get tough is not the answer long term.

False.
There's a 34.0% chance that a second-round pick (31-60) plays 100 NHL games.

Brandon Hickey, to me, is the best pure defenseman prospect we have. Andersson and Kylington have all the flash and hype, but Hickey has been the clear cut best defender at the last two development camps.
Excellent skating, positioning, awarenesses, on ice communication, physical play and his puck skills are underrated.
I doubt management would want to throw a rookie into the heat of a playoff push, but if he got in, heads would turn.

And what are the odds that a regressing player who has 36 points in 178 games turns into a solid player?

I haven't followed Lazar so I'm meh about the acquisition. Obviously the focus on him is for next year, not this year.
My bigger concern is the expansion draft implications -- I have to think this means Brouwer gets exposed. Not that I'd be sad to lose him, but the whole "sign as a UFA, get exposed a year later" seems a bit iffy to me. Maybe I'm overreacting on that front.

Is that really the worst case scenario if we lose Lazar? It would be like trading a 2nd round pick to Las Vegas to leave the other guys alone.
|
Interesting take, but if we expose Lazar and he gets picked, it's clearly a bad return even if the second rounder doesn't pan out. Would you give up a second so you get the keep the likes for Bouma, Kulak, and Wotherspoon for another year? I sure wouldn't...

Neither half of this statement is accurate.
2014-15: 67 GP, 6-9-15 (0.22 ppg)
Some great season.
2015-16: 76 GP, 6-14-20 (0.26 ppg)
Some cliff.
2016-17: Mononucleosis.
I'm prepared to give the kid a mulligan for this year. If we do that, he looks like he's well on track to being a useful third-liner.
(For the record, I voted ‘neutral’.)
