Toews is an upcoming UFA. His caphit is 10.5 million. He scored 37 points last year. After seeing the details, GullFoss' proposal is less outlandish than I thought. Toews is producing Backlund numbers while making 8 figures.
Anyone taking him would need to make the money work with players like Lucic and/or Monahan.

If the Flames could find another way to find a top 6 scoring winger, I'd rather keep them both, but head to head I'd rather keep Monahan right now, I assume Looch is done after this season where Monahan is almost a prospect all over again, if he can translate rehab into play, then he could be the type of player that pushes a team over and a very cheap depth center option for the team in the following years

At first I would have said the Blackhawks just retain salary. That they’d find takers for Toews at $5.25M. And while they would, the only teams with room to take on that much salary are teams Toews likely won’t waive his NTC to go to.
In other words, they are going to have to retain AND take significant salary back.
That is of course, if they trade him in the off season. Waiting until the deadline when cap issues won’t be as much of a concern for contenders opens up more possibilities for the Hawks and higher returns.
I think Toews and/or Kane get dealt in February.

I think our key is to let Darryl do his thing. Keep on the sidelines for FA until around trade deadline and lets also hope Markstrom can play lights out.

Sutter needs to do his thing but let Markstrom rest more. Need to rely on our backup more, cut his games played down to the low 50s

It'll be interesting to see how Markstrom is managed with a hopefully full, normal regular season without covid breaks. Sutter argued last year that the media was being too basic in just looking at the one number (starts) without taking into account real rest days that Markstrom got throughout the season such as the covid break (and I agree with him).

During the Covid break Markstrom literally had covid so I always thought it was a little silly of Sutter to downplay it. Sure he might not have suffered much but even a week of being sick means his body wasn't resting and recovering.

Yeah, I would think that if he wants a longer term he’s going to have to accept a lower AAV. Any team is nervous of how the term will play out with Kadri.

I think they are trying to predict the kind of contract he will get based on similar players that have signed as UFAs over the years. But yeah, I can’t see the same team offering both a short term and long term deal without the long term deal being for less AAV.
I would love it if the Flames could get him on a 3-year deal for an AAV between $7-7.5 million.

If Kadri accepted a 7 year, 50m contract do you do it?

Nope. If he wants an AAV of $7 then it is two years only from me.
If he wants 7 years then his AAV is only $4 max from me.
I'd be okay with a 3 or maybe a 4 year term but it can't come that close to $7m.

I don’t want to offer 7 either but that’s probably what he will accept if he gets a 7 year deal. If he wants 5 years I would think he wants 8-8.5.

Agree, $28M is max I'm willing to give out. Whether it's 4 years or 7 years. I like the $7 x 4 better than $4 x 7 TBH.

No but I would be ok with $42 mil maybe up to $45 mil.
7 years for a 32 year old is a risk but getting him at $6 mil would also give this team a chance to win over the next 3 years.
Later in the contract it just seems like there are options to get out of this deal if need be. Put him on LTIR or pull off a Kassian type deal assuming this team is still competing.
If we aren't competing then have him for a couple years while rebuilding isn't a terrible thing.
$6 mil right now is a steal

$7Mx5 or $6Mx6 might be decent compromises for what the team and player wants. Kadri wants 7 years, Flames probably want 4.

I would be good with either scenario.

6 million for October 2018 through September 2021 Kadri is an overpayment though.

IIRC covid got Toews pretty bad too. Was struggling to run out games and play his usual minutes. Would expect improvement this year
