DOPO?

Hot take - not good.

I've had the good fortune to eat at many 'hot' restaurants and I can't think of another that is so misaligned in in the over-hyped / underwhelming ratio.

Very underwhelming, but seems super-hyped, which I don't get.

Have an upcoming reservation and leaning towards "nah, I'm good"... Like, I'd rather just stay home.

Edit - I totally missed the mistake in my first post... Coffee. Had. Now. Better.

That's what I figured. Ya, I have tried to get a reservation there but impossible but they have six influencers a day eating there. Apparently its not that great but have good marketing. Now I hope they fail, haha.

Oddly, I've been thinking about popping in there for about 15 years now--most recently around Christmas. Should have done it!

What the hell is 'Maptown?'

And how do they plan to sell Maps online? Go toe-to-toe with Google Maps? Which is free?

It is a fantastic store that sells old school paper maps to map nerds like myself.

Maptown was before Google Maps. Used to be a great place to grab topos and the like, or get a big global map mounted on foam board to stick pins in. Obviously their relevance has waned over the past 20 years.

Which will no longer be found on a map.

Map Town is awesome. But not surprising to see them closing down the brick and mortar shop.

Man I haven't been to Map Town for a long time. Pretty amazing they have been able to stay in business at that location for so long.

Last time I was there it was actually sorta busy.

Rent probably went way up. I wonder if the city reclassified the land.

I'm surprised that both Map Town and the fly fishing store have survived for so long. Both a pretty specialized and relatively small market. There's also that new dessert place which is good but they aren't open during the morning rush which I feel might hurt them long term.

I have never been to the dessert place, but they seem to be open later and seem busy when I walk by.

Makes me wonder what other hidden gems a lot of us hadn't heard of.

Green's Lapidary
Map Town
Albern Coins
Calgary Coin Gallery
Reid's Stationers

I've loved going to these places since as long as I can remember, and yet I haven't been to any save for Albern (which is quite boring unless you know what you want in a long time.

Demille Technical books was another one. I'm not sure it is around anymore.

It took 3 days into my recent trip to Nicaragua to both regret not going to Maptown and grabbing a paper map before I left and also to decide I will boycott Google Maps going forward.

Apple maps has the courtesy to say "I don't know". Google Maps will confidently send you to your peril.

Example 1 of 10, Google Maps happily sent us into a dry river bed that it deemed a "road" in a FWD compact Suzuki. Turn around you say? Not possible, because an earlier descent was so steep we skidded down and would never make it back up. I felt like Jeremy Clarkson trying to keep my speed up in sand that was way too deep for that car:

Google knew you were bored and was just giving you a little excitement. Would you like to disable that slider? It's under "personality monitoring and behaviour modification". Note you lose access to spontaneity scoring and achievements if you disable.
