Bigtime - I think HCMA might be doing this project too, so it should be very interesting if so.

It's the School of Architecture, Planning, and Landscaping that is taking this space in the Nexen building. They are at the Campus and the old Central library next to City Hall currently.

On March 14, 2025, the Court of King’s Bench released its judgment in CNOOC Petroleum North America ULC v 801 Seventh Inc. After discovering small concentrations of an asbestos-containing material from construction in the 1980s, CNOOC terminated its lease of the entire Nexen Tower, a major high rise office building in downtown Calgary, with twelve years remaining on its lease. CNOOC relocated its staff to another building and left all 37-floors of the Nexen Tower empty. The landlord, a syndicate of a major pension fund and five prominent Calgary families, sued.
The case was divided into liability and damages segments, and a sixty-day liability trial ensued. The Court found that the tenant’s breach was unlawful and unjustified, and that its purported safety concerns, if validly held at all, were a substantial overreaction to a non-existent threat. The Court found that the building was completely safe, and would remain so.
The case, which has been closely watched by commercial landlords in Alberta and the rest of Canada, will now move to the damages phase. Damages are estimated to be in the hundreds of millions of dollars of lost rent.

You can get anywhere on U of C Campus indoors, or at least you used to be able to. There are a lot of little-used pathways and tunnels.

I think that newer building across from Earth Sciences is the only one not connected via a tunnel or +15.

My buddy had a master key for the tunnels below. We’d smoke weed down there. We tried it a few years ago. It still works.

I didn't know about the tunnels until my second year when I made friends with a bunch of the guys in Rez.
"Its -1000 degrees out there, how are you here in class without a coat or anything?"
- "Come...let us show you our ways!"
They were like Molemen. It. Was. Amazing!
Back in the day when Rez were the Olympic Athlete's residences?
"The floor here is kind of sticky...."
Its best if you dont think about it. Or ever come down here barefoot.

There's an odd correlation of "finding asbestos" to "locked into a really long lease at peak rates". Hopefully the scientists can crack the case.

Rumour is they found some asbestos in the walls on a couple of floors, put there by a contractor from a prior reno supposedly disposing of asbestos.

As long as you leave it where it is it doesn't do anything. It's when you disturb it like in a reno that problems arise.
Vermiculite contaminated with asbestos is also in a lot of homes right up to 1990, as attic insulation.

I think it was mentioned many months ago (possibly by myself) that DOP had a sign on one of the boarded up food stalls at Fifth Avenue Place and it looked like they would be opening up there. I noticed last week that their sign has been taken down and I'm assuming that isn't happening anymore.

Oddly, I've been thinking about popping in there for about 15 years now--most recently around Christmas. Should have done it!
