Not great defence behind him either. No errors but a few makeable plays now extending things.

Another vladdy hit. We're going to end up paying him as if this is the norm aren't we?

Nothing like coming in out of the pen and giving up 3 straight walks and then get pulled. Unreal stuff from the mighty Jays pen.

Shoulda left the starter in. Bases empty, he’s pitching well, you are up 2. Give him the shot and don’t let him pitch to judge.

Back up the Brinks truck to Vladdy.

If he gets paid, I worry a bit about him maintaining his conditioning but I don’t worry that he will get complacent as a player. I actually think he’ll probably play better because he’s the kind of guy who often tries too hard and is more effective when he plays relaxed. If he can get the contract off of his mind, I expect he’ll thrive.

As a team, there needs to be a standard set for fitness and conditioning. Players should be expected to come into camp in the “best shape of their lives” every single season. Spring training is not a “boot camp” to get guys into shape. They need to be professional athletes 365 days a year.

Baseball isn’t hockey where cardio is crucial but success/failure is often about the marginal improvements that a player makes. If players are more fit, they will handle the physical grind of the 162 game season better and that could add a few extra wins.

It really matters what backing the truck up means. Forget jersey sales because that will fully dry up if he’s a bust. So the question is specifically about future performance. He’s recently been lights out but that’s a recency bias if there ever was one. To me the medium where there’s enough risk to the Jays while also satisfying his long term goal, is 6 years at $28M. If you go beyond either figure you’d be taking on too much risk. It’s a very positive sign he’s turning it around but again, he’s shown for a long stretch he couldn’t. Plus his body type is a concern as he ages.

Kirk just missed the Grandslam. That would've been sweet.

I expect it will come in at around 10 x $27m with team/player options at the end of the contract.

The good news is that he’s been remarkably healthy though out most of his career. If they can work with him on consistency with his fitness/nutrition, I think it will work out ok.

It isn’t even that big of a raise as he’s likely to get $23-24m in arb (if it gets there) this year.

To me ten years is crazy town. He’d be 37 by the time it’s over. I’m not sure any player has aged that well into the latter years of such deals. Even after five years I wonder about most. It’s a pure coordination sport. When you age it seems to happen suddenly. I’d hope if such a tenure is provided, that it’s up to the club past year six or so for the option.

Other first basemen like Freddie Freeman and Paul Goldschmidt both signed recent deals around that value that would take them to age 37.

Vlad is comparable to both of them IMO. The Jays can try something creative like a player option after 7 years and team options after 8 years.

None of the long term deals ever age well. That's not the point. You give them length so you don't have to pay them to much per year allowing you to sign other players. I'd offer 12 years 300 million for Vlad. Give him the "3" everyone has been talking about and sign him to be a jay for life. Let him rewrite the record book. The last 4 years may be tough but hopefully he'll have the career to make it all worthwhile. Think Cabrera for the Tigers. Dude was irrelevant the last 5 years of that deal. But Tigers fans didnt care. The dude was almost a back to back triple crown winner and one of the most beloved players in the sport

I dunno guys. 2 years of an overpriced underperforming player is terrible. 4 years is a lifetime in sports. Especially if he's eating up considerable payroll which we all know isn't unlimited.

Yeah, you guys are talking crazy because he's hit a hot streak, imo. I'd love to hear your comments on a new contract a month ago. Don't be crazy because you're caught up in the now.
