Watching Vegas, they are deeper at W than they are at C and appear to be managing just fine.
Any deal for Danault would have to come with extension in hand. Not trading mony for 1 year of Danault.

Vegas and St. Louis don’t have “number 1” centres but they are also HUGE teams. All their players and fast AND big. Flames are still too small. If they want to keep Johnny, Mangy and Dube, they need to add size WITH speed everywhere else especially in the “bottom 6”. Ryan has to go, can’t bring back Reider, and Jankowski has to be replaced with someone with a pulse.
It can’t just be Lucic and Bennett doing all the heavy lifting for you in the playoffs, both those guys were literally done after 7 games of lifting.
Doesn’t matter how they change the top 6, they need a big upgrade for the “4th line”. They need a big strong defensive centre who can kill penalties, win draws and be generally truculent. They need at least one other big winger like that too. If they can reacquire Hathaway, that’d be great, low cap hit and exactly what this team needs. Myles Wood would be great too but he has a pretty big cap hit. Nate Thompson and Brian Boyle as centres would be available but they are also older and their game could fall off any time.

You don't think Ryan O'Reilly is a #1 center?

Yea I do but many didn’t until last year. They have one and they still needed to be big in order to win. Flames don’t have a number 1 centre and are littered with small players.

Treliving never does anything quickly.
He will go through his normal processes and come to a conclusion...there is a LOT to consider this off season after the bizarre year this last one was.
I think, given the circumstances, Ward will get pretty deep consideration. Not sure he is the right guy moving forward after he looked really vulnerable during the Stars series, but he will be part of the discussion and likely on any short list BT cobbles together.

I haven't been paying attention to the notable coaches still available? Does anyone know the currant list of coaches still available?

Stone wasn't signed. Ottawa was refusing to left him negotiate with teams iirc

I would imagine that there are guys still working as assistants that might be looked at so the list is going to be incomplete at best.
If its only guys who are available and have had success in the NHL previously...Laviolette, Gallant, Boudreau, Babcock seems like it at this point
Also...what about the AHL guys? Are they even going to play next season (very much in question at this point)? If not, Im guessing they all become "free agents" and may garner interest from NHL clubs on the lookout for a new guy, whether that be a HC or assistants.

Bruce Boudreau, Gerard Gallant and Peter Laviolette are available. They are top end. Jim Montgomery and Todd Reirden are available and were very highly thought off before their only NHL tenures. Then guys like Babcock, Carlyle and such are available too.

Don't think so as they had to have talked beforehand...no way an 8 year deal happens in a couple hours or whatever it was after the trade.

The reports were that we couldn't talk with Stone ahead of time, doesn't make sense for Ottawa to allow Vegas and not Calgary. And teams can easily agree to contracts in a couple hours if they are on the phone immediately with the agent and both sides have offers prepared. Also in the case of Stone, they had "agreed to terms" that night, but the signing wasn't official for some time, so they may have only agreed to final numbers and were still ironing out amounts for signing bonuses.

that's my recollection as well, that neither team could negotiate with stone before trade completion

Vegas obviously knew that Stone was gonna sign and how much it would cost

Agreed. You will have a hard time selling me that they didn't have communication on this beforehand.

The Stone deal isn’t anything shocking.
Great team on the ice that has been at or near the top of the standings since they entered the league. Not an undesirable location. Contract at market value.
That makes for a quick negotiation.

I also think Doug Weight gets another shot. Dan Bylsma may be on some team's radar as well. Eventually, I suspect someone hires Babcock again too. Hopefully the Peters fiasco taught Trelving a lesson there.
This is kind of off the wall, but I can see Mark Recchi in Calgary. He has connections to Western Canada and is someone that I think the players would be excited to play for. Granted, he doesn't have NHL head coaching experience, so it's risky. I could also see Gonchar following him to where ever he winds up.

IMO there's no question they got to speak before the trade went through.

17 minutes apart and they'd agreed in principle to a complicated 8 year contract extension. It just had to wait until March 1st to actually be signed.
