Did not know the story about Montgomery. If that is true he also should have been more choosy about the area for his celebration.
Montgomery and this are different though and there is no shame in what Montgomery did. He was in a festive celebratory mood and enviroment when a stranger (at least I assume) hands him a beer jug and he just chugs it. Everyone was in love with the ordeal.

The women hockey team celebration was a very brash and arrogant style of celebration in front of cameras on top of official Olympic hockey ring ice. Plus these celebrations occur in locker rooms so it's a bit of abnormal scene.

It's not a big deal at all and they have the right to celebrate and party hard, but I can see why the latter will create disapproval thoughts. Has nothing to do with the sport, or the genders, it's just the way they celebrated and the spot to do it at.

On the other hand, Montgomery was walking through a public area, among the general public, with a tv camera pointed at him the whole way, while on his way to a television interview.

The women were in an arena that was only populated at the time by the arena staff and few members of the media who were working in the media area in the arena (that's how the scene was described in the SI.com blog posted early in this thread).

When they decided to start this impromptu celebration, they had no reasonable expectation that photos of it would ever see the light of day. Based on the SI blog, the media members who were there were enjoying watching the celebration, so the women were probably hamming it up for them a bit too. Then, the wrong person caught wind of it and it became a bigger deal than it should have.

That is true, but it was also in a festive environment as well. So considering it was party time around the TV set, can't really cry foul on him for that either.

It's true they probably exagerated a bit to have fun with some of the arena staff around, but I imagine the photos would have gotten to the media sooner or later. How the heck do photos of a shirtless Patrick Kane or Phaneuf and Kipper smoking manage to get up on the internet? Would've been naive to think it wouldn't pop up sometime soon.

The women team didn't really do anything wrong and don't have to apologize, but it does look bad PR wise and not so classy. Guess at the moment of winning though doesn't really matter and this story won't be talked about once next week starts.

People wonder why athletes dislike the media.
In this case a team concludes their task they've strived for, they wait until everyone wad gone and have a; what they thought, private celebration.
But wait snap snap snap here comes some media stragglers who then whip up a jucey story.
Most admit drinking in celebration isn't wrong, nor is smoking. Or at least no worse than public drinking like Montgomery.
And far as I can see the worst thing they did was assuming it was private. Hardly classless.
Anyone that thinks otherwise is probably a hipocrit or sexist IMHO.

They did this two hours after the game, and people are really complaining about it?

Yeah, I had no problem with that either. I can't complain about how any Canadian chooses to celebrate a gold medal win.

Why'd it take them 2 hours to celebrate and why'd they still have their full set of equipment on?

Hockey teams coming back out onto the ice after the rink is empty to celebrate is very common. This wasn't abnormal at all.

Really? How many times does this occur in Olympic hockey?

Did I claim it occurs frequently in Olympic hockey? I said it happens frequently in hockey, which it does. For all we know it's happened at past Olympics without any media having stuck around long enough for the story to be reported.

The fact that it happened at the Olympics is what is causing the issue.

So why does it matter if it happens in adult leagues in Alberta?

I was looking at pages 13-17, but I didn't see the category listing beside their names until now. I was confused by the "Junior" title up top.

Anyway, on page 37, there is one junior that had a time of 1:14 something. I don't know what age is allowed in these junior competitions.

Because it's something that's commonplace in hockey culture?

who is the source of the photos taken? American media. They are posing. I can't see one of the players family or friends leaking this.
Enjoy the Gold girls you earned it.

It just seems odd.

You celebrate when you win. You don't take a 2 hour break and then decide, yeah, let's go celebrate! And when have you ever seen a hockey team in full equipment two hours after game?

2 things...

They did celebrate in the locker room as well...no question about that. they did however wait until the public was out of the building before going back on the ice...which was not a full 2 hours later, more like 45 minutes.

As for being in equipment....yes I have seen it. Especially when these girls know its likely the last time they will all play together. They were soaking in the win for as long as they could, and i dont blame them one bit.
