Holland knows he won't be there in eight years so why not go all in on a max term for Hyman.

They’re currently touring him around all the top Edmonton attractions. Next stop, McDavid’s basketball court.

The thing is if they play him with McDavid he will produce and the move will be celebrated.
And it won't matter at all.

It is like the Lucic deal though. There is almost zero chance the deal won’t age very poorly. Multiple injuries and approaching 30 he might get 2 good seasons before that deal is looking like a complete albatross.

i like Hyman, but that salary and length of term is eye popping.
Even playing with McDavid that is a lot of money if you can't produce on your own line...McDavid's line wasn't the issue - it was everyone else not named McDavid or Draistl

Will he? Mcdavid's been unable to elevate his linemates like a player like Sid has been able to do over the years with guys like Rust, Sheary, Dupuis, Talbot, Guentzel, Kunitz, etc.
But hey, Mcdavid is a fast skater

That's the thing. Hyman played alongside Matthews and he produced. The Leafs still couldn't get out of the 1st round of the playoffs because he can't elevate the team's best players. Teams have to be mindful of spending on complementary players. I have no doubt Hyman would immediately help the Flames but ultimately it won't matter until players like Monahan, Gaudreau, Tkachuk, Backlund start bringing their A game when it matters. When Hyman's in his 30's and playing 3rd line minutes he's going to be the most popular player on the forum as fans rack their brains on how the team can get out of that contract and what team may take him in a trade.

And what happens when the Oilers have no defense, no goaltending, and get crushed this season? What happens when McDavid says, "I've had enough" and demands a trade come next summer. I see this as Edmonton's last chance to get something going for McDavid. He can't afford to waste anymore of his career in Loserville. I think the line is drawn in the sand and he can't like what he's seen so far.

Oh believe me I'm not defending the signing if it happens. I'm just saying we should ready ourselves for Oiler fans and the media praising Da Oil for another great move - when the dude puts up numbers by tapping in set-ups from McDavid.

Does Hyman have any defensive chops - can he be like Lindholm on the Gatorade line?

What Edmonton actually needed that would advance them was a line driver that could make things happen on their third line (second if the wundertwins are paired up), and second powerplay unit.
Adding a slightly better complimentary guy to ride shotgun with McDavid still leaves them with all the same holes that sewered them before.
Now paying 40MM for that is just outright.. Edmonton.

He will get points playing with McDavid because he's a good player but he's not going to be a factor on their powerplay. RNH (8 more years so he better at least be good on the powerplay) is their powerplay specialist that plays alongside McDavid and Draisaitl so he's going to be on their 2nd powerplay unit and that's a loose term as it rarely ever sees the ice as Tippett plays the first unit for almost the entire powerplay.

They haven't made a great move in years and it seems lately that oiler fans are realizing this.
But yeah the media will be trumpeting from the hilltops.

This would be the perfect way to highlight an atrocious off-season for the Oilers. Hyman at 6x6? Bad. Giving up additional assets so they can sign him to an 8 year term? Pure Oilers.
Now Holland needs to just sign Barrie for 4+ years for 4+ million and the Oilers will be set to piss away the final McDrai years. *chef kiss*

Even Oiler fans are upset with Dreger's tweet...
God, I hope it happens!
