I like Frolik. He's the kind of player you find on cup winning teams.

I doubt Neal was involved at all.

Yeah I wouldn't be surprised if that's just speculation the poster picked up here.

Both AC and myself were speculating that it may have been the case just due to the way it all went down.

You had Boomer and Ryan Leslie both tweet it was happening - and those guys rarely say anything unless it's a done deal.

Then less than 5 minutes later it was off and wasn't going down. The way Boomer talked about it this morning too made it seem like a deal was going down - only for something to get in the way of it before it could get processed by the league.

AC and I just speculated it was Frolik's NTC since he was mentioned by another poster as being part of the return. But since then Boomer did clarify in a tweet to me that he thought the return was bigger than that.

I do think that Boomer was hinting on the radio this morning that TJ Brodie may have been included in some way too - but that may have just been me reading into the way he was talking about it because I personally don't think they'd move Giordano's best friend mid-season.

Bob McKenzie on Cgy/Wild deal

Quote:
The Insider was asked if the Flames were disappointed at how the trade deadline played out.

“Yeah, I think a little bit,” indicated McKenzie. “Both Pierre LeBrun and I believe Mike Russo from The Athletic - and obviously TSN in the case of Pierre - they reported later in the day yesterday that the Flames and the Wild basically had a deal done for Jason Zucker to go to Calgary, and something went wrong at the last minute and the deal got kiboshed. I think Calgary was a little miffed at how all of that rolled out. So they thought they had a pretty significant add at the deadline, and for whatever reason - and I don’t know what it was - it didn’t materialize.

Always the risk when you let the timing on deals run down to the deadline. You have no time to iron out last minute glitches.

I wonder if the Zucker deal will be something the Flames revisit in the offseason. GMBT loves big draft trades

Sounds like Fenton got cold feet.

Now I'm curious what the deal was.

If the Wild are indeed dedicated to a true "rebuild", then adding the 1st would make all kinds of sense as the money and term for the two players are basically a wash.

pretty unlikely it was Frolik having the Wild on his no trade list and i highly doubt BT would ask him to remove them even if it was.

Maybe over-thinking this but i just cant see bringing Zucker in on his deal AND keeping Neal.

True but in this case it "sounds" like it was a pretty straight forward player and pick for player.

Feels like Fenton either changed his mind last minute or asked for more after BT thought they had a deal.

Yeah that is possible and if that is the case it likely gets re-visited at the draft.

I think the draft may be a real interesting day for the Flames fans.

Frolik, Brodie, Neal, & Stone will all likely be on the block - as well as potentially our 1st rounder.

Also quite possible that the road block was Neal's injury if he was in fact the one being moved. As maybe the Wild ended up being concerned about that in the end.

And the very best part of all that is.....we have those assets to actually do something because they weren't spent on something that isn't a weakness on the club, yesterday...AND....will have the knowledge of what this club needs/wants for a playoff run should this years be shorter than expected.

That knowledge will be more valuable to the management group than the assets themselves.

Good point, I hadn't considered that at all but entirely possible.

They will also know more about where the draft picks are, and what prospects are ranked at those positions.

Keep in mind Boomer said the return was more than Frolik+1st.
So that wasn't the deal.
And I don't think he would say that if it was Neal+1st.

So basically it was Froli+1st plus something else of value?

EDIT: or maybe it wasn't Frolik at all but rather Kylington which I would equate to being "much more". And maybe explains the earlier deal for Fantensternberger

Zucker in and Frolik or Neal out makes sense.

Not sure why you'd bring another forward in and not be moving another one out.

I agree... this is the type of guy you want on the team in the playoffs. He’s going to take it to the next level. Hoping the 3M line sticks and he gets decent ice time.

Because James Neal is a buyout candidate and Jason Zucker can actually still get up and down the ice.

Hard to describe in words just how badly having James Neal on this roster right now impacted the ability of the flames to improve the team yesterday.

Its true. The Knights having the cap space to re-sign Mark Stone was probably the reason they were willing to give up Brannstrom. The future was not affected as badly given they were able to re-sign Stone. Who knows? If Treliving had the space to re-sign Stone, he might have been more willing to move Valimaki? I don't know.

No doubt about it. Had the Flames not added Neal in the summer I know I personally would of had much less optimism about the team as I felt Lindholm was a slight upgrade on Ferland but we still lacked the top 6 forward we needed in the top 6.

Had we known Lindholm was going to be a PPG player it would have been a different discussion regarding the need for another top line forward. I don’t think anyone thought Neal would fall off a cliff this badly either.

Had the Flames signed Maroon to a one year $3.5M deal or something they likely have the flexibility to add Stone and sign him to that extension. That or feel comfortable they could have extended Hayes if they picked him up if they wanted to keep Valimaki.

Had Treliving turned Neal and futures into Zucker yesterday there would have been plenty of Wizard gifs on these boards
