Put more stock into his 20 points in 76 games last season.
You know who has had similar stats the last couple seasons? Michael Ferland.
|
and Mikael Backlund had 25 points in 73 games at about the same age Lazar is now. Glad we didn't give up on him, eh?

Doubt this makes the team any better right now. Can't see him push Brouwer out of the top 9. Better than Chiasson? Probably. But I'd rather see Hathaway on the fourth line.

I'm not opposed to moving Bennett to the wing, but common, for Lazar? Hell no. He might not even make it into the line up let alone take Bennett's spot.
As an FYI, Bennett put more points in his rookie season than Lazar in 176games.
Show some faith

Bennett put up more points in his rookie season on Lw. I'm nor saying Bennett needs to be a permanent winger. But a shift to Lw where he is historically better at producing points would be a big help.for the Flames right now.

Oil Kings fan here who watched a lot of Lazar - one of my favourite junior players. Lazar got ill which seriously hampered his pro performance. He's a much better player than some are giving him credit for. I think his upside is solid third line with a slim chance of second line or he moves up due to injury above him. Think Bennett-light. He has good offensive skills and played a physical game in junior. He may not make it at all as a NHL regular but he's worth the gamble. He needed a change of scenery.

I forgot about the Dave Cameron connection until I listened to the TSN interview with lazar.
Flames likely had a better read on Lazar as a pro than any other team aside from the Sens.

Disappointed. That 2nd could have been a PK Subban or Patrice Bergeron.
Basically, if you were going up to the podium on draft day in the 2nd round and you knew that the guy on the board would have 36 points in his first 176 games, would you still take him even if his junior stats were good?
Not the end of the world I just don't like the trade."
"Lazars stats look like he's struggled every year? 6 goals and 20 points is his career high.
For a 2nd?
Bleh. Swing and a miss unless he has a total turnaround here."
Such Hyperbole.
If you ran a poll and proposed this trade before it happened I don't think any of you would like it. But of course if the Flames do it, you have to love it
Trade is getting ripped on around the league by the way.

its a calculated risk....and if you run the numbers its good for the Flames
like all risks there is a chance it doesn't work out

Again, I don't think you know what hyperbole even means.
You made your point, yet you continue to whine away. Same thing you do relentlessly in game threads. So great to have you back.

Im suggesting if one can write off anow unused pick as a Mitchell Wahl then it can be fairly stated as a Subban as well

I voted neutral for now, simply because I don't know much about Lazar.
But having Cameron's inside view is certainly reassuring. It'd be nice if Lazar had an impact this year and forced the Flames to protect him over Brouwer, or trade an asset to protect him.

From 1990 to 2010 the Flames drafted 21 players in the second round. 17 players played a combined total of 192 games in the NHL for 16 goals and 58 assists. The other 4 players were Jamie Allison with 372 games, Steve Begin with 524 games, Blair Betts with 477 games and Kurtis Foster with 405 games. The second pick isn't worth much in my opinion.
Curtis Lazar has same stats as Michael Ferland if you take away the last 10 games Ferland has played. Numbers in junior were comparable but one guy was drafted in the first round while the other in the 5th round.

Everyone keeps citing the odds of a 2nd round draft pick only being 10% likely to play more than 100 games.
I bet the odds for a guy who had a career high of 20 points and has regressed since and only has 1 point this year suddenly turning it around and becoming Mikael Backlund are a lot less than 10%.
But hey, maybe the change in scenery is what he needs. Still seems like a high price to pay.

except that's a false equivalency.
chances that the 2nd turn into Wahl are many, many times more likely than it turning into Subban.
if those outcomes were equal, no one would ever trade draft picks
