But even then Trumps numbers were those of a generic republican and a generic republican with an average economy after a two term rule is a small favourite.

Sanders wouldn't have fixed African American turnout. So you still lose NC and Florida. He might have helped in the Midwest.

Sanders would have destroyed Trump in an election. I also think Obama would have beat Trump if he were allowed a third term.

Both parties just picked the worst possible choice which is a sad indictment on the state of US politics.

Here is the thing, and it is undeniable, and right wing strategists won't make much of an effort to deny it, and the more open ones will flat out tell you, the core base of the republican party is made up of racists. Disenfranchised southern voters who can be relied on, regardless of political affiliation, to vote along racial lines.

This is the 20% deplorables Hillary mentioned and which I think is actually an under representation of the party base. Before there were Evangelicals, before there were supply side sycophants, the GOP could rely on racists. Less than a hundred years ago, the Ku Klux Klan were able to run as a ticket in places in the Southern US and win the majority of electable positions.

Based on Trumps early turnout numbers it looks like he tapped into this base since Reagan (who was virulently racist through the entirety of his presidency), but that still isn't what gave him the edge.

Hillary and the democrats lost this election, and may have lost a generation of voters, from organized labour.

I think this the type of demographic shift not seen since the Dixie Crat era.

Without a coalition of organised labour in key battleground states, the co-opting of say the Latino vote which I previously thought was most crucial looks positively unimportant.

I don't know if Sanders wins, actually I doubt he does, but he definitely takes a lot of the wind out of the sails of Trump in Ohio and Michigan. He wins those two states imo, Maybe Pennsylvania too.

Interesting stock market effect. Gun stocks plunge after Trump wins election.

And there won't be any mass panic bulk buying for at least 4 years. When they repeal the assault weapons ban there might be a spike, but that's about it for gun manufacturers.

On the plus side, Last Week Tonight is going to epic this weekend.

Comedians' material just writes itself now.

That show is so played out already. It would be better if he just presented the stories they do every week without the comedy. Great stories and issues, but he's got a pool of comedy about an inch deep.

This thread reads like the E=NG thread after a couple Oiler wins.

Where were all you right wing posters in the Election echo chamber? You left peter and Buster all alone, just to get banned for their efforts. Shame on you.

There's more if you'd like. Just ran the first one through translators.

In fairness some of these stories are on refugees rather than immigrants. Still an issue though and a conversation worth having.
Any article that uses rape statistics that compare Sweden to other countries or Sweden prior to 2005 without accounting for the particulars of Sweden's changed laws in this area is immediately questionable. They have a far wider range of offenses that are classified as rape and sexual assault than other countries and reporting rates are much higher in Sweden than almost any other country. In the more than a decade since that law came into effect sexual assault rates have actually declined despite an increase in immigration and refugees.

Citing isolated incidents isn't particularly helpful either if you're trying to illustrate a trend.

Anyway, if you go to places like Info Wars and The New American for your news then I don't know that there's much sense in even writing this, but here are some more nuanced articles about the matter:

By no means did I support Trump, but I did get kind of jumped on a while back for defending reasons why he had support that wasn't about racism.

The politics threads got pretty ridiculous and hyper partisan. Supporting Trump is still dumb though, not just because of what he says, but because he's a con-man who really has no idea what he's doing.

Perhaps a positive that will come out of this stunning result is that people won't be so quick to dismiss the outlooks of others as simply racist or misogynist.

Its always interesting to see this. I agree with you. I'm just stunned that so many dont or didnt see it.

Hes going to go down as the single most successful conman in World History.

He won the American Presidency by thumping his chest and staring people down.

They just elected the Junior High School Bully.

Who would venture into the American politics thread AKA The pile on Trump thread? What would that have gained you?

I think it's clear though that he knew what he was doing. He kept everything very simple and emotional. The average voter now just does not comprehend the complexities of the world when they get into the voting booth. Telling them why free trade benefits them isn't going to get their attention. Telling them you'll bring their job back will. People don't want detailed policies, they want comfort.

I don't think Trump knows what he's doing, but I think Roger Ailes has a firm grasp on what he's doing.

I knew a guy like Trump. He had all my friends convinced he was the greatest guy ever, while stealing their girlfriends and crashing their vehicles. But hey, he smiled lots and complimented them! Sadly, it took them more than 4 years to realize how big of an a-hole he was. Which means Trump may get a second term before America wakes up.

Really? We all have our own echo chambers of social media I guess. What I'm seeing is women/minorities scared for their future and more brazen examples of racism and bigotry in the hours since the election.

The conman always knows what hes doing. hes supposed to be the only one who knows, otherwise, in a logical sense, the con shouldnt work.

Broadly speaking, as soon as a person realizes that they're being conned, they should exit. Stop. End the con. Not double down!
