I like Mike Richards alot, I would love the Flames to take a shot with him. Then there is his contract! I can not see any club in the league taking that contract.

He will not be picked up on waivers, although I hope the Oilers do lol. They are even not that dumb, would love to eat my words.

A trade needs to be worked out yet cant see LA doing it. Gonna have to take a cap dump from another team, give up a first round pick and probably their best prospect, plus eat half of his salary for 5 years. They will buyout his contract. Take the cap hit at 50 percent of the contract for years to come without costing draft picks and prospects. Waivers is just them hoping.

I think LA is trying to throw a hail marry on someone taking Richards contract of their hands. Don't think he will be claimed. LA is going to have to eat some major salary, or bring back a bad contract.

The simplest explanation:
Quote:
6) For any Player on a One-Way NHL SPC who is [sent to the minors], the [cap hit] [is reduced by] the sum of the Minimum Paragraph 1 NHL Salary and $375,000 for that League Year […] [$925K in 2014-15].

How is it even possible that 46% of voters in the poll think he'll get claimed?

Anyone else find it convenient that a Kings blogger feels the answer to what ills the leagues top team is to provide massive cap relief to the team he happens to support right as we approach the trade deadline?

People still think of him as a star. The guy is a 4th liner who looks finished. They're not going by 2015' results.

I don't think it's been suggested yet, and stay with me here as its a metaphor from a different sport, but I think LA is going for a Hail Mary here.

Here's his buyout numbers from last summer. The way I understand it, he can still be bought out but now the Kings will need to take a cap hit.

I'd bet this is the route they go next summer.

You are correct he can be bought out, but he's talking about the compliance buyouts that expired last year. They didn't count towards the cap.

"I don't expect him to get picked up on waivers," Lombardi said. "But, there's still time here. He knows what he has to do. That part I am not questioning. The way the schedule is down there, it allows him to get his innings in and conceivably he could be back here. That's the way we're approaching this. That's the short term.

"On the long term, he could be a different player. If you remember when Teemu Selanne when he went to Colorado it looked like he was done. He looked done. But all of sudden things changed. He went on for a longer career. They're different players but I see no reason why this can't happen here, either."

The Kings GM also underlined the importance of Richards in the Kings' becoming a championship team. It's that bond that kept Lombardi from buying Richards out last summer when the window was closing on buying out contracts that wouldn't count against the salary cap.

"We don't win the first Cup without this guy," Lombardi said. "He set a tempo. There's still time here. I'm hoping that he's got to do what he's got to do to get going."

Well if they were talking to Calgary and Winnipeg, it shows they weren't worried about Richards being the spark plug that would beat them out of a playoff spot. What I mean is you don't upgrade your rivals at your own expense. LA was trying to drop an anchor on us.

Who's he? I never quoted anybody I was responding to a couple of posts that seemed to be under the impression that he could no longer be bought out and also showed some figures. If the Flames traded for him to gain some assets, that could also be an option.

That dumpster fire north of us could definitely give him top 6 centre minutes. Should improve them, to outside of a top 3 pick

Part of me thinks acquiring Richards (+assets) in a cap-dump deal is win-win. The upside is phenomenal, if we could give him top 6 minutes & get him back in decent shape.

Then the rest of me (the rational part of my brain) worries that 5 years of that contract will limit the Flames options when all the young players need to be re-signed. The rational part of my brain also bitch slaps me for contemplating adding a poor skater to the line up. I can't imagine him buying into the kamikaze forecheck system Bob Hartley employs.

It's a big gamble which is unlikely to pay off & I'm really glad Treliving changed the goal-posts on the rumoured framework for a trade. He should be asking for the Moon.

There is no win to blow a hole in your cap structure spending 28 million for the next five and a half seasons for a guy who's a replacement level player.

It's honestly dumb founding that so many people are just ignoring the last three years. Richards decline is step and unrelenting.

Here's an analogue, did you ever make fun of the Oilers for signing Shawn Horcoff for five years at 5 million? Well you're essentially advocating that the flames do the same thing for a worse player.

I truly think that a large percentage of posters just never watch other teams except when they play the Flames our late into the playoffs.

Richards is done. There is no hope he can return to a top six player.

Uhm, the Kings have played hockey in June the last three years in a row. That IS late into the playoffs. Eleven playoff rounds, ten of which they won, sixty-four games in all. And Mike Richards was huge for the Kings in all three years.(maybe that's just me "ignoring the last three years")

I get a chuckle out of people who play the "well you must not even watch hockey" card. It's so lame. I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that nearly everybody on Calgarypuck watches hockey. Even if it's the Kings.

That's exactly my point. You watched a limited sampling of a player clouded by hindsight because "he's a winner" and made bad conclusions.

This is why the flames moved the goal posts on the parameters of the trade imo. I am sure they have the majority of the trade in place since the third week of the season and have been sitting in it. Everyone knows its an anchor and being in direct competition hurts LA. If the flames had 10 less points i bet Richards is a flame.
