It's not the nudity that upsets people: it's the idea that other people are enjoying the nudity. Going back to its origins of live audiences, TV has a participatory feel to it; we're all watching at the same time, but we can't see what others are doing as they're watching. We assume that they're laughing at what we're laughing at, crying at what we're crying at, recoiling from what we're recoiling from.
So if a boob were to unexpectedly pop out in the middle of Glee, the puritans worry that there are others who are getting a prurient glee out of the moment that they are not getting.

The post was partial in jest, but I think there is some basis for it.
Desensitizing to violence can lead to further acceptance of violence. One possible result of desensitization is further participation in violence, although that isn't the only result. The same can be said of porn (and yes a boob is soft porn).

Nothing on tv can compare to that brutal early life assault. Being forced to rape your own mother.......by your own mother.
You mothers make me want to retch.

Gaping vagina? Not everyone's mom was quite as well versed in the dongal arts as your mother.
That said the whole boobs = R, brutal violence = PG-13 has always puzzled me a bit. Oh noes it's lady parts, quickly to the puritan machine!

Porn is considered to be nudity without artistic merit, so no that is not porn. Girls Gone Wild videos, even though (AFAIK) they don't contain anything but boobs, is porn.
I think the problem you have with my definition is that society in general has shifted the definition of porn to solely include nudity that involves sexual situations. If that is the definition you are using then that it certainly explains the difference in opinions we have. When it comes down to it, whatever you call it doesn't change what it is, so there is no sense squabbling over details.
Porn has many possible negative effects on a young mind. From objectifying women and creating unrealistic physical expectations to encouraging participation in what would be defined as sexually deviant activities. Of course porn is not alone in things that can have negative consequences on a young mind. Violence (including simulated violence), lack of a safe or loving environment, excessive TV and video game use, poor education regarding lifestyle choices leading to lifelong physical problems are among many things that could have negative side effects as people grow up.
However if you look at that list you will realize that almost anything can have a possible negative effect and you could easily argue that many of those supposed negative effects could have stemmed from many other sources and not be related at all.

I don't know why you're lumping in Canada and the US together in this.
Canada is far more lenient when it comes to these things. Canadian regular over the air stations have been showing nudity for decades and some have even shown softcore porn during late nights. While in the US, one breast shown during the Super Bowl whipped the public into a frenzy which made things much more restrictive on network tv.
The only reason there isn't more nudity and less violence on Canadian tv is due to Canadians preference for US tv over the crap created here.

I'm not picking on you GGG. We arnt even talking about porn though, it's a boob here and a bare as* or *gasp* bush! Its anatomy... I for one would gladly let my child see nudity over violence. Why north Americans, mostly Americans think that seeing a boob is more harmful to a child then seeing someones head blow up is crazy, I need to see a report that backs these facts up.
|
I agree that there is a big difference between a boob and porn. Generic nudity as part of getting dressed in the morning has no harm and is definately better than violence but put a scene in a strip club and I think I would rather kids watch violence.

Quite frankly, I think it is easier for children to understand violence than sex. The morality around violence can be taught at any age. To understand sex, you have to have the proper hormones and then gain experience with those hormones.
In addition, sex has an effect on people that violence just doesn't have. I could watch a violent movie on the coach and be totally bored. There are certain other types of movies that will cause a physical reaction in people and are just totally distracting.
