Its possibly by using an infectus modchip, but that involves a hardware mod.

There are other builds of linux coming out that aren't gimped if you have jailbroken the PS3. Also there are ports of emulators for DC, MAME, Saturn, SNES, SCUUMVM, etc that are fun too. Open source media managers and AVCHD/MKV media players, etc.

There are currently two jailbreaks, one with a payload that allows pirated games and one that does not. The second is being maintained and developed by people who want to distance themselves from the pirates.

So, still for playing pirated games. (I will give you is the Saturn and possibly the SCUMM emulators. Of the list you mentioned they are the only ones that could potentially play the original media.)

Don't get me wrong here, I have thousands of roms for just about every system out there. I have run console and arcade emulators on PC, Dreamcast, Xbox PSP, Wii and PS3. My original "jailbroken" Xbox was one of the best set top boxes ever. XBMC on the Xbox was by far the best media server of the early to mid 2000's. I just don't pretend that any of that was not pirated content.

Jailbroken or not, Linux on the PS3 is severely crippled by the amount of Ram on the PS3. I updated my firmware on the PS3 before I knew that it got rid of the other OS option. It blocked my 10gig Linux partition and I still haven't bothered to reformat to get it back.

The PS3 can play AVCHD natively. MKV requires little more than mkv2vob if you want to play them directly on the PS3. (takes a minute or so to convert)
If you have a half decent computer then PS3 media server for PC or Mac will allow almost any media format on the PS3. (I'm running an ancient Pentium D system and PS3 media server works like a charm)

Yes the web browsing and streaming content like youtube suck and are essentially unusable. However I can't see myself screwing with the firmware just for that.

I'm not that tech savy so I was just curious as to what else you can do with the PS3 once it is hacked.

I think things like homebrews and emulators are neat, but not worth all the trouble trying to circumvent the PS3.

The only thing I wish Sony would address is their crappy web browser. Sometimes I'm too lazy to go to my computer to check something quick on the internet, so I just use the PS3 to do it. Half the pages don't even load properly because the formats aren't supported.

Can the infectus mod chip fix corrupted nand flash? My PS3 is a giant paperweight right now. I didn't even do anything to it. It bricked itself during a power outage while I think it was trying to firmware update. Sony USA fixes this for free. In Canada they outsource it to some lame company that charges $200.

What is the stock firmware on your PS3? 3.55 and below you can do it directly from recovery otherwise you'll need to downgrade and likely have it sent off for that as you need to flash the chips using an e3 rom flasher. A company I know used to do it in Edmonton. Not sure about Calgary.

You can attempt to buy one yourself for like $40 otherwise pay a bit more for someone else to do it. I had mine done a few years ago. Will see if I can dig the contact up.

I ended up finding a guy on kijiji, he cleaned out the system, replaced the thermal paste, did the downgrade and installed the new custom firmware. Thanks for the suggestion though!
