So, still for playing pirated games. (I will give you is the Saturn and possibly the SCUMM emulators. Of the list you mentioned they are the only ones that could potentially play the original media.)
Don't get me wrong here, I have thousands of roms for just about every system out there. I have run console and arcade emulators on PC, Dreamcast, Xbox PSP, Wii and PS3. My original "jailbroken" Xbox was one of the best set top boxes ever. XBMC on the Xbox was by far the best media server of the early to mid 2000's. I just don't pretend that any of that was not pirated content.
Jailbroken or not, Linux on the PS3 is severely crippled by the amount of Ram on the PS3. I updated my firmware on the PS3 before I knew that it got rid of the other OS option. It blocked my 10gig Linux partition and I still haven't bothered to reformat to get it back.
The PS3 can play AVCHD natively. MKV requires little more than mkv2vob if you want to play them directly on the PS3. (takes a minute or so to convert)
If you have a half decent computer then PS3 media server for PC or Mac will allow almost any media format on the PS3. (I'm running an ancient Pentium D system and PS3 media server works like a charm)
Yes the web browsing and streaming content like youtube suck and are essentially unusable. However I can't see myself screwing with the firmware just for that.
