I'm sure a lot of us have stories about stupid things we did as kids that could have ended in tragedy if not for dumb luck, I know I do. Sometimes I think of the crazy things I did, and I shutter.

I definitely did some dumb things... but never to the extent of pissing around on a skyscraper, which i assume this kid must have been doing. I feel sorry for the mother because she'll probably lay the blame completely on her self for the rest of the life when the fact of the matter is this kid should have known better.

I don't actually think I would feel comfortable at all living in a highrise with children. I understand that maybe vacancy or cost was a factor, but if at all possible, I would never make that decision.

Dude, we used to jump off the roof of the local elementary school into snowbanks when I was a teenager. Kids do stupid things.

Not to take this off on too big of a tangent, but statistically speaking, the risks associated with living with a child in a highrise building are minimal, especially relative to other activities people engage in with their children (driving comes immediately to mind). Millions upon millions around the world raise children in highrise buildings without incident. Even though the Edmonton case the other day was only 3 stories, I'd say it's a minor miracle the kid survived. Even 2 stories is a long way to fall and not sustain significant injuries or die.
Terrible and tragic accident, and you have to feel for the family and everyone else involved in the incident (witnesses, responders, neighbours, etc.).

how hard would it be to be the cop or EMS worker that responded to that call? i couldn't imagine witnessing something that bad, then having to shrug it off so you can do your job and go on to the next call
i consider myself fairly desensitized to death and tragedy, most of the really terrible news stories hardly affect me. but seeing a dead child in person would mess me up

Did you lived in a skyscraper as a kid? If the answer is no, then of course you didn't. Same as I was never pissing around with farm equipment as a kid. It doesn't mean I knew better; just the opportunity for accident never came up.
I am deathly afraid of highs, and when I first moved into a high-rise I had some issues even stepping onto the balcony. But as the months wore on I got braver, and would even lean against the railing. Obviously we don't know exactly what happened here, but often its easy to "forget" just how high up you are and what the dangers are.
I know we often feel we have to say "how could this happen", and want to assign blame. But this could just be an accident.

Polica, fire and ems have critical incident stress management teams. They are amazing,I have used them.
Having said that, kids are the worst. You might learn to deal with it,but you never forget it.

To clarify, you're not afraid of heights, you're afraid of falling to your death Glad to help! (j/k - and not trying to make fun of that fear)
However this happened, it's truly a shame, but to reiterate, yes, kids, especially kids that age and a little older, do think they are invincible. They are the kings and queens of the "Yeah, but ..." statement.

Just have to yell at kids. I lived in a highrise as a kid and I WAS NOT ALLOWED on the balcony EVER.
My brother went on the balcony once and my mom gave him a beating he'll never forget.

Honestly this has to be one of the more ignorant posts I have seen on CP. Really, you are asking if kids are that "stupid"?
How about naive? Kids think they are bullet proof because they cant imagine something like this actually happening to them. Calling a recently passed away 9 year old boy "stupid" is really cold man.

Just an update to this sad story... The family were recent immigrants from Ethiopa and it appears that he leaned over the edge too far when he heard his mother calling.
Good looking kid... so tragic.

Interesting that it's not the first time a child fell from this building.

There are two balconies on many Bromley Square suites, a wide one off the main living rooms, and a narrow one off the master bedroom. They are separated by a concrete divider that extends out to railing, so there is no way to move between them.
So if mom called his name from the bedroom, he may have tried to lean around the concrete divider to holler back at her and catch a glimpse. A fairly innocent mistake on the kids part with a terrible outcome.

It’s not out of line for that building at all - jumpers, balcony-to-balcony break-ins 20 floors up, entire suites OD’ing and rotting until the rest of the floor complains about the smell, and the unfortunate guy who jumped down the garbage chute and was compacted to death (and made the Darwin awards!) are all par for the course at Bromley.
When my wife and I heard the news, we looked at each other and said “Bet it was Bromley”...and it was.

I probably could have been a little more delicate with my wording. I was just actually curious as to whether or not kids can be left out on a balcony being as how im a 23 year old and haven't dealt with or been around children since i was one.

Watching CTV's report last night... one line stuck with me. The family moved to Calgary to provide a better life for their son.
If there's one goal every competent parent should have, it's providing a better life for their children. It's what I want for my children, and their children. My upbringing wasn't terrible, but it's the challenge to do better for yours.
So hearbreaking. I don't think we'll ever know what happened, as I can't imagine anyone was watching the child get into a position of harm, without causing it themselves. I'm not suggesting this was done at the hands of someone else, I'm just saying that so far, all we've heard is that there were people home, but not outside with the child.
