I always like it when the Brits train in Canada. It's a nice tradition dating back to WWII when Canada was responsible for basically the majority of all commonwealth pilot training and a big factor in those wars.
It's nice they do the tank training, etc. here too, and why Prince Harry was around for awhile.
Then again, I'm an anglophile and a monarchist imperialist at heart.
Maybe when Canada and the UK get the F-35s going (although the UK may drop out) they can do it together. Those CF-18s are like 30 years old.
Not being too aircraft savvy here so please excuse the dumb question.
This to me just looks like your average run of the mill commercial aircraft. What about it makes it sound any cooler or different?
These were actual takeoffs from Calgary Airport in 2008. I think somebody at the time mentioned that the Tornadoes can not take off from any airport because the reverberations caused from their sound at take off were capable of cracking walls etc. Apparently Calgary's airport meets the standards for that, as well as long enough runway length.

4 oldschool Rolls-Royce Conway Turbofan engines that put out a hell of a lot of noise and smoke. A real classic in action. The VC-10 first arrived on the scene in 1962.

Yep old school Royal navy Transport, but it halls ass! Look closely at the picture and you can see there are two engines on either side of the vertical stabilizer.

What is the loud flight that took off last night around 10:20 p.m.? It seems that there is a semi-regular flight that departs at that time on Tuesdays, and thought it might be those British military transports.
I am in MacKenzie Towne, and it sounds like that plane is only 50 ft away.

How often? I know there is an Air Canada 777 that takes off around that time towards the south. The British ones normally depart in the AM when they are here. Could also be a Cargo Plane, I know some of the 727s that depart at night are pretty loud.

Definitely not a 777, AC is not operating them on any of the routes out of YYC right now (AC heavies right now are A333, and 767's out of YYC). British Airways is also just a 767 right now. KLM an A332, and Lufthansa with the A343.
We do get a few cargo 747 operators in on a regular schedule, Cargolux and Asiana. It may have been one of them, or it could have been Kelowna Flightcraft's DC-10, that is another classic and makes more noise than the typical modern jetliner.
Or as stated above some of the older cargo 727's can make quite a racket, Purolator's in particular. They usually rattle my windows a bit if they start their turn to the west closer to downtown.
Go to this website and you can see all the incoming and departing traffic for YYC. It is not always 100% accurate and real time tracking has a lag of about 5 minutes.
Since the thread has diverged a bit into all questions and answers about aviation out of YYC I thought I'd put up some links that I use to get info on the interesting stuff flying out of our airport:
http://twitter.com/WeeinYYC Tweeter WeeinYYC, works at Westjet and has some good connections to get the scoop on rare visitors. An amazing photographer also.
