this has been in place in BC since february I think, in January it was put in to law but they were warning people for a month
but it hasn't changed anything, I still see tons of people (especially aged 16-20) who are still holding their phone to their head while driving

I'll still talk on my phone in the car, I'll just keep a more watchful eye out for cops near by.

Hopefully this law will help stamp out the massive amount of non-commercial CB operation that occurs today.

So here's another question - Does BlueTooth headsets and in-dash phones get the axe too?

I'm curious about the aftermarket GPS systems. Those people are all over the road and I assume its because they're watching the stupid thing.

What? No Wendy's in the car? Well, when my blood sugar crashes on the TransCanada and I lose control of my car right into the back of a gasoline truck, causing a fireball that kills the entire town of Cochrane, they'll be sorry!

I've had a cop tell me they can already give people a ticket for using a cell phone while driving but place it under another law which says you have to have two hands on the steering wheel at all times.

The law says you can't operate any GPS while the car is driving.

The proposed law highlights sheet that I posted in the OP doesn't mention anything about not being allowed to eat while in the car.

Yeah it does, doesn't it? It said no food, which I assume means eating.
Unless they are going all philosophical on me: you can eat food but not posses it.

How does that work with the turn by turn ones?

This law now gives significant others a reason to not answer their phone. I like it.

There's nothing about food or drink mentioned at all, and GPS devices are allowed if they're programmed prior to driving. Basically, you'll be allowed to use any device in the vehicle so long as you're not physically interacting with it while driving.

I might be in the minority, but I personally think driving while talking on your cell phone should be perfectly legal. Yes, you do get those odd idiots that can't multitask, but personally I have never had any trouble driving around while talking on my phone. Seriously, what is the difference between talking to a girl while holding a device to your ear as opposed to talk to a girl while she's sitting beside you with your hand on her lap?
If you are too stupid to be able to drive with a small distraction like talking on you're cell phone, then personally I don't think you deserve to have a driver's licence.

That's the problem Q- you are under the impression that talking on your cell does not impair your ability to drive. While in fact you become a horrible driver; and yet are unaware.
There have been many studies. It was shown on Mythbusters, and a few weeks ago they put the results of major university study on QR77. That study showed that 0.2% of drivers could actually pull off the multitasking required. One out of every 500 drivers.
Sorry, but the science says you are wrong.

Its not the talking part they care about, its the 2 hands on the wheel thing.
Note the law specifically allows handsfree cell talking, GPS use, etc.
I love knee-jerk reactions though, they're what makes CBC comments so hialrious to read
