Yep... I can see that... given the number of natives that are in prison in Sask and the stories I've heard from my cousin who is a correctional officer in one of the prisons in Sask.
Not a nice place to be.

2nd degree.

I guess if nothing else, and as selfish as it seems, be glad it is only a co-worker charged, and that neither the killer nor the victim were family members. It is amazing just how much these things impact everyone around them - moreso than the obvious loss of a loved one. There was a noticeable police presence at my aunts funeral because several members of her killer's family attended. And then it turned surreal.

From my understanding, a first degree murder conviction in Canada has a sentence of 25 years with no parole. The trouble is, it seems like most of the time, people can bargain their way to 2nd degree or manslaughter.

A friend my brother and I grew up with is in jail for murder. We both moved and hadn't seen each other for around 10 years or so I'd say, when one day I picked the newspaper and bang, his face was right there. It was def a holy **** moment for sure.

This is from August of 2006. A story entitled "I smoked a doobie with a murderer"
Quote:
Alright, a little background before we get started here...
So, I am in my second year of a 2 year program at school right now. There is a guy in our program who was on the 3 year plan (he drank too much in his first year and failed some classes; he is now in a few of ours). We were taking our 10 minute break in the middle of our class and he comes up to me and asks if I want to go outside and burn one with him.
Not being someone to make a guy smoke on his own I accept. We head out and it is really the first time I have talked to this guy and he is telling me about how he came home from school the previous day and there was a buttload of cops around his place and there was a body discovered in the alley behind his house. I thought it was some messed up **** and we finished the doobie and headed back to class and I had forgotten about the whole incident, until Monday morning.
The head of our department comes into our class and tells us the Scott Keeler had been arrested and charged with FIRST DEGREE MURDER. This is messed up, I smoked weed with the guy the day after he killed someone and he was talking about it casually.
Here is the story in from April when the body was found...
http://www.canada.com/calgaryherald/new ... 3a4f08cccc
"Scott Keeler has felt uneasy since officers called him Friday at 7 a.m. to tell him there had been a murder in the alley behind his house.
"I was going to be moving out pretty soon. I'll be doing it much sooner," Keeler said.
---------------------
Here is the latest installment:
From http://calgary.ctv.ca
Calgary Police have laid new charges in connection with an old murder case.
The charges were laid following a lengthy investigation into the death of 28 year old Collin Laframboise last April.
Thursday, two men were brought in for questioning in connection with Laframboise's death.
24-year-old chase Leland Hehr and 22-year-old Scott Alan Keeler are now both facing charges of first-degree murder.
In April, the 28-year-old man's body was found in a northwest alley by a friend.
He had been stabbed to death.
Several articles of clothing were also found at the crime scene.
Police later turned to the public for help to see if anyone was able to identify who was wearing the items the night Laframboise was killed.

Totally out of the blue. He wasn't into work the day before and I had been told he was in jail (i figured dui, or something like that).... but the next day I was told he was charged with 1st degree murder.
Wow. I have never known anybody who has been charged with a crime this serious. If convicted (and I hear a conviction is pretty well much a guarantee) he will spend the next 25 years in prison before he is eligible for parole.
Not only has this person ended the victims life and irrevocably changed the victims family's life, but the have also, in a moment of stupidity, virtually destroyed their own life. This guy will now be 55 years old when he is released from prison.
Such a shame.
|
The person my cousin sat beside at work killed his wife, two kids and a family friend before killing himself a couple years ago. I thought that was pretty shocking.

One of my scout leaders when I was a kid killed his wife then himself. He was a super nice guy and a really positive role model to all of us right up until he snapped. I guess it just goes to show you never really know what's going on in other people's lives, or what kind of pressures they are dealing with. You think you know people, but I don't think anything can prepare you for something like that.

Yeah, no shiz. I don't know any murderers. I did go to school with siblings that were murdered by their dad, though. That was many, many moons ago.

Guess you know where he got that doobie . . .

The only way the senseless slaying of small-time drug dealer Collin Laframboise could have been worse, a judge said Tuesday, is if Scott Alan Keeler had intended to kill him during a botched heist last year.
Court of Queen's Bench Justice David Wilkins then sentenced Keeler to nine years in prison -- six for manslaughter and three more for robbing the victim of his backpack containing money and drugs on April 21, 2006.

Wouldn't it be freaky if I made a post that said
"I can't believe I did that, hey Troutman can you PM me I need a lawyer"
That would be awesome.
