Now, I'm not going to get into the details of the matter but let me tell you that when I was told this at work it had to be the biggest shock of my life. I swear my jaw must have dropped a foot! I almost couldn't believe it.
Totally out of the blue. He wasn't into work the day before and I had been told he was in jail (i figured dui, or something like that).... but the next day I was told he was charged with 1st degree murder.
Wow. I have never known anybody who has been charged with a crime this serious. If convicted (and I hear a conviction is pretty well much a guarantee) he will spend the next 25 years in prison before he is eligible for parole.
Not only has this person ended the victims life and irrevocably changed the victims family's life, but the have also, in a moment of stupidity, virtually destroyed their own life. This guy will now be 55 years old when he is released from prison.

Such a shame.
Is there a link to the actual murder? I know the Herald had a story about Homicide investigators being called to a house in Edgemont, is that the one?
Its pretty rare that anyone gets 25 years with no hope for parole in this country. He'll be out in less then a decade, its the Canadian way.
My first cousin will be one of the rare ones. He's in solitaire and has been since his arrest due to the fact that he'd be killed in general population.

Currently for 1st degree murder the sentence is life with no parole for 25 years. However, there is the "Faint Hope Clause" where you can apply for parole after 15 years.... but the present Conservative government has plans to repeal that clause.

Didn't that guy who stabbed his girlfriend and video taped her dying on his cellphone get convicted for First Degree Murder, and they set his parol elibility at 12 years.

That bill died when the government prorogued parliament.
