You can't judge NIN on the basis of one particular song. For the most part, Reznor created albums rather than compilations of singles, so you generally have to listen to the whole album to get the whole effect (not the case for Pretty Hate Machine, but likely the case for every album since).
You also can't judge NIN on the basis of one particular album, as they are some distinct differences between the approaches taken with his major successes. Pretty Hate Machine is raw, simple, but was innovative at the time it was released. Downward Spiral is complex, completely groundbreaking when it was released, and just generally brilliant. The Fragile is a complete range of sounds, and is largely instrumental, with very few tracks appropriate as singles.
A lot of people now do what Reznor did, or have adapted his innovations into their own work. To someone listening to NIN now, it may be hard to understand what the big deal is, but if you listened to NIN back when he was about the only guy doing what he was doing, you'd have a different appreciation for him. I think the Downward Spiral is a masterpiece album, but if you listened to it for the first time today, you might think it sounds the same as lots of other stuff. But that's only because other artists have built upon what he started.
If you do like NIN, but wish it sounded just a bit more evil, PIG is another fantastic industrial artist.
Of course, if you want something a bit more evil-sounding, and a bit more maintstream, there's always Rammstein (if yelling in German can be considered "mainstream").

NIN are excellent in my opinion. One of my favourite bands. To compare them to Nickelback in front of me would get you shot.
Lady Gaga isn't bad if pop is your thing. Different strokes for different folks I say. Not everyone likes the same music.

Well, you can dislike how he's choosing to spread the message - I won't get into that... I just think it's a good message and should be spread.
Another example then... Obama is saying how good of an idea universal health care would be. Obviously, he's not the first one to come up with the idea. Is Obama a poser not inventing universal health care but still having the gall to talk about it's virtues?

I haven't listened to NIN in a long time, but The Downward Spiral spent a significant amount of time in my CD player in Jr High. It was a REALLY nice change in sounds from a billion and one Nirvana clones at the time.
I pulled the chute when The Perfect Drug was released.

I'm waiting for the techno meatheads to come out and say Skinny Puppy is better then NIN. I don't care if you don't like the music, watch a concert of his and say he doesnt entertain.

How long can NIN play the angry young man card? Reznor is damn near 45 now, but he's still projecting 'the image'?

They had a brief period of time where they were pretty good, but most of their stuff sounds too contrived.

NIN - With Teeth is one of my favourite albums. I mostly like Radiohead, Johnny Cash, The Beatles, Springsteen, Brian Wilson... I seriously don't understand some of the comments in this thread... utterly strange.
Maybe they're not the greatest band of all time, but to compare them to Nickleback seems like a pretty low-blow.
