check memory express with the type of memory to see if you can get it cheaper...
extra memory is always good, the 6gb isnt bad, not sure about the 8gb as far as prices go...
ive got 8gb in a workstation, and 2gb in a home pc that run win 7, cant say i've seen a big difference as far as performance there. My only concern was when someone was trying to run win 7 with 512 or 1gb - might be an issue there, but as they say, the more the merrier.

thanks again. I live in the States, so Mem Express isn't an option, but i can checkout Newegg, Tiger Direct etc.
My thought is that it is likely cheaper to upgrade now than later on because the Dell system is pre-configured with four 1GB chips which likely occupies all the memory slots, so to upgrade later, i'd have to pull out existing memory chips and replace with larger ones
I guess my original question was really about whether Windows 7 would even be able to utilize the extra memory, or would I be upgrading without really seeing a performance boost

well, again, more is always better, so if you can get it for cheap (retail store, or the 6gb option), I would do it.

Windows 7 64 bit can utilize a lot of memory so add as much as you like. I guess it will depend on what kind of programs you use, whether you need more or not.
Windows 32 bit can only utilize about 3 gigs of ram so there is no point in adding more.

Depends on what you are doing. I'm at 4GB right now and I do some stuff with virtual machines (running an OS in a virtual computer in software) as well as software development and I really wish I had 6 or 8GB.
For general every day use maybe not as necessary, though it's not a very expensive upgrade either way.

That is not the HD player, right? It says it outputs 1080p in the specs but it can't actually play a 1080p MKV file or whatever, can it?

Ah good catch, I think you are right. The regular ones do HD, but this one just upscales 480p. Scratch that, not a good deal!
